Ah! My Goddess vs. Oh My Goddess

Post by y2kwizard » Sat Dec 07, 2002 11:33 am

Are they even related to each other? One of these is the movie and one seems to be a series. If you had to pick the better one, which would it be?
"When I got fat, I decided to grow a beard" -- The Great Andy
"Is it a DARTH visor?" and "It's funny cuz it's pants" -- The Master of on-the-spot Funniness
"You're too young for your age" and "I'm sorry for apologizing so much" -- The Master of on-the-spot Randomness

Actually...

Oh my Goddess is the english version of the show. Ah Megumisama is the Japanese show. It's the same show. Some people tend to mix up the title and obviously it has led to some confusion. It's one way or the other.

There is a movie and a mini goddess series other than the tv series.

In case my explanation was confusing, I'll give an analogy.
Fushigi Yuugi
The Mysterious Play

Both are the same show, Fushigi Yuugi, but one is just the english title.

That makes a ton of sense. THanks a lot for your time!

If I'm not mistaken, it was the OVAs, then the Mini-Goddess series (on TV), then the movie.

And is the manga still being published?

Ive seen a couple music videos from the Ah(or Oh or whater) My Goddess movie, and im really interested in seeing it. However, I havent seen any of the series or the OVAs. How important is it that I watch those first? Will I still be able to enjoy the movie having not seen anything of not previously seen anything from the series?

I think you would be able to enjoy it.

warning of some very minor spoilers

You would miss out on knowing the full depth of Keichi's and Belldandy's relationship and how they met if you watched the movie first. You won't know why, when each of the goddesses travel to heaven they do it in a very different ways using different elements.

Watching the mini-goddesses series doesn't really need any background. It's just cute and funny. The movie is beautiful but I think it could stand to have the plot and storytelling smoothed out. I can see how it could be quite confusing before at least reading about the oav series.

Think of it like watching the 1st Tenchi movie before seeing the any of the Tenchi series.

About the name...
The series in Japan was called "Ah! Megamisama!" or "Ah! Goddess-sama!"
When they made the title, they did not realize that it could be translated as a pun in English. When the English rights came up, and the North American release company (Pioneer at the time) mentioned this, the original creator said that the English title should be "Oh! My Goddess!" since it's a good translation, and it's a pun all in one.
AnimEigo now owns the rights to the 5 episode Oh! My Goddess! OVA, but Pioneer still owns the rights to the movie and Chibi-Goddess. Pioneer left the title of the movie as "Ah! My Goddess!" though, despite what the creators had said.

As a result, there is much confusion.
