Weird animes? Give me suggestions please! :D

Post by DoomKitty » Sat Jun 17, 2006 9:50 pm

I LOVE weird animes. However, as you probably know, there are different categories of weird. Here are what I think are the categories of weirdness that animes go into and the animes I have seen that fit into them:

Random weird [have absolutely no plot]. Example: Bobobo-bo-bo-bobo
Comedy weird [have little to an entire plot, are comedies]. Example: FLCL, Excel Saga, Azumanga Daioh
Deep weird [have a deep plot, that makes little since to the unserious viewer. usually NOT comedies]. Example: Texhnolyze, Blame!, Serial Experiments Lain
Other weird [animes whose plot don't fit into any of the above categories]. Example: .hack//GIFT, Nekojiru-sou

Now, what are some weird animes that you have seen? Do you have suggestions for any for me to watch? [remember, I love any in the categories I made, or, suggest some from your own category!] Are there any too stupid to watch? Share your knowledge here, I'd appreciate hearing it! :D

Le Portraite de Petite Cossette. It's the romance/horror lovechild of se:Lain and evangelion.

Oh, sorry for the double post but, Boogiepop Phantom, Evangelion (especially the movie, but series is righteously fucked as well), Kino's Journey. All really weird and meaningfull. Boogiepop especially is a great mind-fuck. End of Evangelion would be great freaky shit if you're on some decent drugs.

Oh dude, EOE. No doubt. But you'd get the most out of it by watching the series first, unless you just want to be randomly weirdified. The series is not as weird except for a few moments here and there, and the original last few episodes. (Haven't seen the director's cut versions yet, but I hear they're different.)

Revolutionary Girl Utena: the Movie is well known for its trippiness. It does have a serious plot, but it's communicated entirely in code. :P It's not gruesome-trippy like EOE, but it's heavily stylized and drunk on its own symbolism.

If you haven't seen Akira yet, I think it's up there. It's a classic now, so people are probably used to it, but it freaked me out when I first saw it.

It's plot isn't too serious, actually. If you've watched the entire TV series, the movie is like one big inside joke. :P

I'll definitely vote for Paranoia Agent, though. After watching it a couple of times, I'm still not sure if I have things figured out, exactly.

As for a weird comedy, check out Hale Nochi Guu.
