I'm sure alot of you have noticed that there are usally three common types of girls in anime, and often at least one of each (TV series more so than Movies). Now this isn't every type granted, but most of them fit in these three, or a combination of them.

The cute one:
Personality:
Often hyper, happy, loud, talkative, childish (might throw tantrums and/or cry alot)
The look:
Often short hair, ponytails, pigtails etc.
Casual clothes, shorts, shirt, skirt, hair acessories.
Examples:
Lime, Skuld, Asuka, Miaka, Su, Ed, Misao, Kagome, Nanami, Miki, Yuffie/Selphie/Eiko/Rikku

The beautiful one:
Personality:
Quiet, reserved, intelligent, possible loner, subservient.
The look:
Usually very long hair
Formal clothes, Dresses, Kimonos
Examples:
Belldandy, Cherry, Rei, Kaoru, Yui, Motoko, Kikiyo, Ayeka, Julia, Ifurita, Mekio, Aeris/Rinoa/Garnet/Yuna

The sexy one:
Personality:
Forward, aggressive, independent, hot temper, likes to drink, a bit on the tough side.
The look:
Hair varies alot.
Clothes: as little as possible short skirts, tight clothes, leather, tank tops.
Examples:
Faye, Urd, Bloodberry, Misato, Megumi, Sango, Ryoko, Kitsune, Shayla, Arimi, Tifa/Quistis/Beatrix/Lulu

I don't have a preference, but I think a more interesting cultural question is why this particular trio of character personalities (with one of each) shows up as a distinct group in so many anime:

I'm sure I missed some, and it's not just anime. The newly released (on DVD) Hong Kong fantasy-action movie, The Heroic Trio, has the same character set. Not to mention Charlie's Angels.

I'd have to go with the beautiful reserved type. There is something irresistible about a girl that is really hot but doesn't need to flirt with everyone to prove it to herself. My personal pick would be Rei. I know how popular she is but I think it's mostly because guys want to know whether or not they can crack the nut. A pissing contest at its finest. I'm not trying to come off as the sensitive type. I just find her silence refreshing.

The Three personalities represent tend to represent the following personality types of women in anime:

The Mother-type -- caring personality, enjoys cooking cleaning, etc.
The older-sexual woman -- forward with her sexuality
The girl next door -- usually tom-boyish, demure, and uncomfortable with her sexuality.

Usually whenever you have a trio of girls in an anime they fit pretty nicely into these categories. I think it has more to do with it being a successful character cliche to follow more than anything else.

One might also include "ice queen" type personalities: beautiful, but possessive of a cold outward personality. Usually this personality isn't in competition for the lead male's attention. Note that Ifurita in El Hazard first belongs to this character type, but moves closer to fitting into the "Mother-type" personality at the end of the OVA series.
