If you like X then you'll love Y

At work, I let my students watch various anime.
Naruto is by far the most popular, with most of my students having watched the existing 135+ eps already.

Other shows, like Fruits Basket, and oddly enough Princess Tutu were also popular. The thing is.. I'd like to get some new stuff, but short of downloading craploads of stuff and 'hoping', I'm out of luck.
Most of my students don't really have access to this stuff at home, so they can't really tell me alternatives. Don't worry about getting me links and stuff, unless you want to PM me, I'll check out the shows that you recomend and see if they are age appropriate. Elfen Lied for example is NOT going to get shown in my classroom. Rouroni Kenshin (the ova) is borderline, but I'd probably show it if I'm in the mood. Strawberry Eggs... I'd say NO, even though I thought it was a cute show.

I was hoping that, unlike threads that simply ask: what's great, and what's everyting that you watch? I could get some comparisons.

Since there are some serious Otaku on the site here, who have probably watched far, far more than is healty perhaps you could share some of that wealth of knowlege.

To keep it simple, if you could post the show, a comparable show and why you think it would be a good choice.
I'll give examples from what I know:

Fumoffu -- Yakitate.
They are different Genre, but both are full of scenarios that are so out of the expectation that you'll find yourself laughing before you know it.

Evangelion -- RahXephon
Pretty close to the same story.. but different interpretations. If you liked one, you'll probably like the other as long as you can get over the similarities.

Abenobashi -- Excel Saga
Wild off the wall humor that kind of sorta defies description, usually.

Ok, so it's a bad pun on chromosomes....

But the question is real; I really have no idea what someone who likes say... Naruto, or Fruits Basket would also like.. Maybe that Kare Kano thing.

If they like Naruto, they'd also probably like Hunter X Hunter. If they like Fruits Basket, um, maybe Magic User's Club?

Serial Experiment Lain - host in the Shell

Both these anime have themes revolving around questioning existance. Specificaly, lain questions the role a physical body plays, while gits focuses on what constitutesto a living, self aware entity. I would write more but I just spent $50 on a phone recharge that expires in a month when I thought it would last me 6 :(

I thought it had something to do with the X anime.

Yeah, that's what I was going for.

Anyway, I feel that anyone who liked serial experiments lain is likely to like Boogiepop Phantom, and vice versa.

Well, if the Kenshin OVA is borderline, Boogiepop might be, too. Not as openly bloody, but rather disturbing.

However, if Boogiepop is okay, then I'd have to say they might like Paranoia Agent. Provided that they enjoyed Lain and Boogiepop, that is.

I thought that too until an argument in another board proved otherwise.
