Must See Anime

Post by Battousai_Killa » Sun Apr 17, 2005 10:57 pm

I am still relatively new to the anime scene, so i was just wondering about the anime that you consider "must see". I am currently watching the platinum collection of Eva, and it is great. Cant wait til the final volume comes out on Tuesday. thanks in advance

Must see? that would really depend on what type of anime psycho you would want to be. I figger as for the basics, ones to look for would be Cowboy Bebop, Trigun (for basic action and fanservice), Animatrix (for the Matrix), anything from Studio Ghibli (for childhood warmth). and Sailor Moon, Inuyasha, and Dragonball Z (to see the low point of anime fandom and why it isn't such a bad idea to commit suicide)

I really dont have any one category im interested in. I've looked at Cowboy Bebop and seen a few episodes, trigun, Ive looked into Excell Saga, I saw Outlaw Star while it was on Cartoon Network. Ive watched Grave of the Fireflies and Spirited Away, and like I said, am alost done with Eva. So mention pretty much anything and ill look into it.

Well depending on your tastes, I recommend Haibane-Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain, Elfen Lied, Patlabor, Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Full Metal Panic, Tenchi Muyo, Azumanga Daioh, and Gunslinger Girl.

Tat is a broad recommendation, but it covers a lot of topics, have fun and enjoy your anime.

If it weren't for Sailor Moon, anime might not have attained the popularity outside Japan that it has, and I personally don't think it's that bad, as long as you're watching the subtitled edition.

I'll recommend a few series, among them those that I used to corrupt my friend into the anime world:

Cowboy Bebop--accessible to the masses, kick-ass, and well-dubbed, for the subtitle neophytes out there.

EVA--I've seen dozens of series, but haven't watched this one yet. Even so, I recommend it, since you're watching it already.

Full Metal Panic--Good mix of mecha and high school comedy/romance

Love Hina--good introduction to the harem/comedy/romance genre. Despite the fanservice, it has some really cute and touching moments.

Angelic Layer--the cutest, most saccharine series you'll ever see. One of them, anyway.

Excel Saga, Azumanga Daioh, Serial Experiments: Lain--all three good, but are on crack or some other drug--be warned.

Koi Kaze, Please Twins--for all your incest fetish needs!

Haibane Renmei, since it's been recommended before

Scrapped Princess--my favorite show, it has fantasy / sorcery / action / comedy / romance / deep philosophical stuff (which you must enjoy, since you're watching EVA) -- despite containing all these elements, it never feels jumbled or unfocused. It comes out on DVD in just over a week! :D :D

Uhm... How about Escaflowne is seriously a great fantasy anime? Regardless of the ending, it has a great mix of music, magic, romance, action, and even a bit of science fiction. One of the best theories of Atlantis I've never seen. So it's really high up on MY list of must see Anime. Don't want the Fox Kids version though, go for either the uncut dubbed or the sub.

Uhm, others:

Ronin Warriors- For a really spiffin' taste of how a dub can completely transform a good Anime into an equally good Anime. Tons of action and mysitcal armors.

Full Metal Panic- Whoever said it, I completley agree. Great mix of comedy and action. Check out the manga too, it seriously is hilarious!

Princess Mononoke- It's a Studio Ghibli, which means it already completely kicks ass. Has great action and beautiful animation.

Peacemaker Kurogane- I love this, it's a new view on the Shinsengumi as seen from studio GONZO. It's really well done, with a bit of slapstick and action.
