Saikano

Post by Spikebomb00 » Sun Feb 27, 2005 4:55 pm

Hey guys, I have a question. Well two questions, actually. It's about Saikano, I saw the dvd in a store the other day and it intrigued me. I searched online but I couldn't find any detailed info on the series besides what's on the back of the dvd box. So number one: Is Saikano worth buying, or should I read the manga first, or should I not even get involved with the series? And number two: Can anyone give a little more detail as to what the show's about?
Thanks

The work. Which will become a genre in itself, will be called...

Well, i'm a big fan of saikano, both the anime and the manga. As a matter of fact, it's my favortie show of all time. The story is very deep and intriguing. Although you have to be able to handle a bit of depression because it's really sad.

The story is about two highschool kids that are starting out a relationship, however it's in the middle of a wartime (what the war is about is somewhat explained later), the guy is somewhat of an ass (sports jock and sort of things) and she is very shy and appologises for everything. The girl comes to a very sudden discovery that she has been designed to become the ultimate weapon, a weapon of total distruction. The only one she can share that knowledge with is her boyfriend, but he becomes very scared of her because of that, because she can't totally control that part of her and the weapon can switch on at any time. He however loves her totally so he is torn between his fears and love, and the fact that he is a total jerk doesn't help a lot eighter.

Well, that's a quick synopsis which doesn't have too much spoilers. Going to make an AMV with it sometime next month (hopefully).
I really advise buying the series, it's absolutly wonderful and very touching and deep.

I dont agree with that synopsis much. Its a very good series, worth buying, but as said, depressing. Pretty animation. Its really not so much about the war or the "whys" of the war, but how war affects people, relationships, love, and hate. Its a pretty good study of how people react in wartime, too. Shuji isn't a jerk, he just doesn't know how to react to Chise's affections or shyness, but grows to love her unconditionally, and while her condition is certainly shocking to him at times, i think any fears he has is overcome by his love for her. And he is often frustrated at his lack of ability to help her. Its NEVER implied in the series Shujii is a "sports jock", or anything of the sort. And Chise doesn't "discover suddenly" she is such a weapon, apparently she knows, and has tried to continue with a normal girls' life while dealing with this. The series is based on emotion and human hearts, and yes, while depressing, is GOOD. Worth the purchase.

Normally I don't necropost, but in this case, I will because I have a valid question and I didn't want to start yet another Saikano thread.

I just started the series, and I admit I want to be spoiled here, because I hate fuzzy details. The war is explained later? Could someone please tell me who is attacking Japan? If it's the US, I'll wait for the explanation. If it's NOT the US, where the hell did the Naval forces in Sasebo or Yokosuka go? Frankly, we wouldn't allow that crap, and this fact is really impacting my suspension of disbelief.

I haven't really finished the whole series, but from what I heard they don't really say who's attacking Japan. Probably the creators consider that fact to be irrelavent to the entire story.

Total crap. Shame on the creators. It's relevant when you know that Japan is essentially a protectorate of the United States when it comes to military action. I hate when productions of any sort (books, shows, movies) assume that story telling isn't required to deal with known facts. Grrr.

Most anime occurs in an 'alternate universe' setting. It's fantasy and therefore requires suspension of disbelief for the story to work. I'm also told that the language (diction) used in most anime is intentionally archaic and out of place so that people can see that it is fantasy and not something they would/should hear or see in real life.
