japanese dubbed movies!

i was watching quest for the holy grail (normal in engilsh) with japanese dub and engilish sub...i hear alot about bad egnish dubbed anime, but what about japanese dubbed movie? you think thay feel the same way about them? thay talk more formal, then normal for engish speaking people.

Are you kidding me?!
Japanese movies that are dubbed are horrible beyond belief.
Like the old Bruce Lee movies.

Just bad; in my opinion nothing should *ever* be dubbed into any language.
People hating to read the subtitles notwithstanding.

Depends. Where I'm from, I've seen movies err 'dubbed' by one guy with a really annoying voice, and noone paid attention to that - they were too busy being impressed with the movies themselves

Eh, ignore my earlier statement since it doesn't answer your question.
My rant was about original Japanese movies being dubbed to English.
Then again I don't like any dubbing at all...

...but... but... the guy with the annoying voice is really hilarious! Especially when he trie to do serious female roles!

I'm a total purist about some things, Otohiko.
This is one of them.
Don't care if the movie, series, short is in Chinese Mandarin, I want to listen and see the original.
Swedish movies in Swedish.
Japanese movies in Japanese.
Spanish movies in Spanish.
Get the idea?
Not lazy like others that seem to be unable to read subtitles.
May laugh with some dubbings but it's probable I'll be laughing at them and not with them.
Just the way it is with me.

I'm not a purist, but I do strongly prefer originals. Granted, there's benefits to using audio as a point of reference as opposed to on-screen text, and I personally find it kind of interesting to compare how some of the dialogue and voices translate from one cultural setting to another (whether successfully or not). But yes, originals any day for me though (and lord knows I dig those subbed chinese movies, nonsensical as they may sometimes seem!).

As for one-voice dubs, the amusement factor is too much to bear.

Maybe, but I've seen so much butchering that I'm slightly apprehensive of giving other dubbings a "chance".

To me dubbings are like "sloppy seconds".
And in my opinion there are only some things in life that should/could be sloppy seconds.

That's beside the point, but anyway...

Well, I agree to an extent. Dubbing as a process fascinates me, but dubbing as a result, unfortunately, often disappoints. Although that often seems to be thanks to sloppy-seconds work rather than the inherent nature of dubbing.

A good dub doesn't have to be sloppy, but it's still a second. As in, one should still treat it as an altered interpretation, like one would a translated book, rather than an accurate representation of the original.
(I have a similar approach to Russian literature. It's interesting to read it translated to see how it's altered, but, considering my level of proficiency, it's much nicer to read Dostoyevski and Bulgakov in their original tongue...)
