Eva Death:Rebirth DVD English

Has anyone compared the english DVD release with the Japanese ones? I only have a crappy VCD from Son May of it and if the subtitles are to be believed then there are some structural difference. Aside from the so-called "edited in" scenes which weren't all that impressive. I also wasn't that impressed with the additional material that was added in. Makes me wonder why they made it 2 sided when they could have fit the extra stuff all on one side and atleast provided me with a nice DVD cover.

Gonna add in my own complaint here.

My only real gripe with the English DVD (although, I haven't seen the Japanese one) is that the Mokuji Interactive, which they make a big deal about on the back, is basically just the other additional information, only viewed during the movie. I hate features like that, anyway. I don't want to have to pause the movie to look at them That's why I only turned on the capsules on my Akira DVD once.

Yeah the Mokuji is stupid. Its nothing more then the Magi Archives. And that had about as much information as a newbie posting in the japan.evangelion.nerv newsgroup.

I don't know how good there are, but if its anything like the dialog its probably wack.

I saw a clip of it, the scene where shinji is about to be killed but wonderful Misato comes and saves him

In the Japanese version the guys are saying "don't hate me kid", then Misato comes running in and shoots them all. Puts one up against the wall and says "Don't hate me..." and pulls the trigger. In the Dub~ she puts him against the wall and says something like "Right back at you!". Something is lost with that :\ It's not the SAME!

Um... I thought I could remember it, but no such luck. Damn! Sorry, I'll check my DVD tomorrow morning.

Anyways, I really enjoyed the english DVD. The interactive thing wasn't that good, but I liked the audio commentary. And I found that it had way more features than any other DVDs. Others have things like the trailers, a little behind the scenes and some character profiles. This had way more, like all the definitions for everything, the audio commentary, the interactive thing and for some reason screen shots.

I turned on the dub to death and rebirth because I was curious, and I too was not impressed with the translation. Has anyone read the interview with Amanda Winn-Lee from animerica? she's the one who did the commentary on the dvd, and wrote the script. In the interview she says:

"I believe if you stay true to the original intent of the line, that the actual wording is not necessarily as important...as long as it's true to the intent of the character. For instance, if one character is angry and the other is trying to calm him down and they say, "hey buddy, don't get excited" in Japanese, and if it is totally in character for him to say, "hey buddy, don't get your panties in a wad" English-wise, then heck, yeah! It's more fun and adds more power to it, and it actually translates more truly to what the Japanese intent really does mean."

I disagree with her. Who is she to judge the intent of the character? Eva is very complex, and therefore I believe that it should be left as is. But that's just me.
