Vampire Hunter D

Post by billy_wires » Wed Jan 14, 2004 9:19 pm

I recently saw Bloodlust, and researched a little on the subject. There seem to be two items on animenfo. There was bloodlust, then another one. Is there a difference? If so, are there differences in either of the following:

Animation quality / style?
Story line?
Likability?

Thanks.

From what i've heard, the old one is bad.....in most all respects.

I've seen both vampire hunter D movies ... and Bloodlust ws quite good, the original one, the animation was not so good, the dub was really bad ... but the story it's self wasn't too bad. It makes a nice prequel for Bloodlust and gives you an idea of just what D goes through on a regular basis and just how long he's been wandering around. Or atleast i think so.

Even my anime-hating sister said Bloodlust "doesn't suck"

I am in love with the animation. The show itself is awsome.

well if you forget about animation quality and the dub quality, VHD is great. Bloodlust fixed a bunch of things that went wrong with the original by cleaning up the art and doing a decent dub ... however i'd still liek to see it in the original japanese with subtitles.

Again propyro......the japanese wasn't the origional. The english track came first so if youw atch the japanese, you'll be watching a dub.

The original VHD was great for it's time... twenty years ago. It was one of the first story driven gothic anime movies out there. Unfortunately, it was also made on a shoestring budget so the animation leaves a bit to be desired.

More recently Madhouse (the people who brought us Ninja Scroll) made VHD: Bloodlust and the original soundtrack is in English. Apparantly the director felt that vampires are a western subject and should be recorded with a western language. He could have just as easily picked French or German to make the movie but I'm guessing he already had ties to the US when he did Bloodlust.

If you are looking for a movie with great animation, truly original character design, and an OK story then Bloodlust is a good pick.
Only get the original if you're a completionist, curious about anime history, or a die hard goth.
