Big O Anime. Mech anime Rip Off or really disturbed show?
Look I've been watching Big O on adult swim and I just gotta say this. WTF is up with roger and his love fetish with dorthy god it's jsut wrong. And another thing what the deal with the tomatoe shit. I'm really disturbed by the whole thing. It's a good anime just reallly really weird. Also whats up with Angel?

Don't be surprised, the man/android girl thing has been going on forever. Personally, I figured that Roger/Angel would have been a better couple. As far as the tomatos go, if you saw the last episode of the first season, it helps. Rosewater, the older one, implanted memories into children for them to hold. It's like he was harvesting them. Those children, Roger included, are the tomatos. It's symbolic.
Probably too busy to be here right now.

Re: Big O Anime. Mech anime Rip Off or really disturbed sho
It's classic forbidden love plot. Kinda like Romeo and Juliet. The bottom line is that as personalities they are attracted to each other. The conflict is that physically it can not be. Sci-Fi commonly does explore where the line is drawn in what makes us human.gforcecm wrote:Look I've been watching Big O on adult swim and I just gotta say this. As for the rest, just keep watching the series to find out.
PS: It's spelled 'TOMATO'. Gee, 10 years later and Dan Quayle's legacy is still around.

Geez I have to spell this out again?
##################### SPOILERS###################
In ep 13 we found out tha the tomatoes are genetically engineered. Roger is a genetically engineered person, a clone. The references to the bar codes, the tomatoes, and all the bald kids are clues that Roger is one of the tomatoe kids. He was cloned to pilot Big-O.
We saw that in the past the real Dorothy in ep 14 used to date the guy known now as Beck. Roger back then knew Dorothy and was in love with her and she was in love with him. During the event that erased everyones memories Dorothy was killed. Her father was a brillant robotics scientist and somehow was able to recover his memories and built Big Dorothy that was seen in ep1 and 2 of Big-O. Using the money he made from building Big Dorothy, the father was able to build R.Dorothy and R.D.
R.Dorothy was built to replace the daughter he had lost in the past. She somehow has the memories of Dorothy Wayneright. I suspect that somehow her spirit or soul were transferred to a machine the same way Alan Gabriel gave up his human body for a mechanical one, kinda like in Ghost In The Shell.
R.Dorothy has memories of the past and Alex Rosewaters wants them because the memories of the past somehoew taffect the fututure in Big-O. My only idea is the old saying "Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it"
R.Dorothy and Roger Smiths were in love in the past and because of that their destinies are linked. Dorothys soul may be a machine now but when she is reborn in the next existence they will try to hook up to be together. The end song ..something like "Always" and shows Roger and R. Dorothy sitting together on an hourglass. As long as time and space exist they will try to be together.
The designer of Big-O envisoned a show that "What if you took Batman and took away his suit and gadgets and batmobile and gave him a mecha and a spiffy car. The similarities are not an accident. Neither is the fact hat Sunrise studios animated Big-O and the Batman series.
Like Neon Genesis Evangelion Big-O has alot of symbolism and hidden clues. They dont come right out and say it but they are there if you look.
One big question is where is Paradigm City. There are about 8 different clues that it is New York City. In different episodes we see whats left of Brooklyn Bridge, JKF airport, Grand Central Station, Wall Street, and the Chrysler building. Those are the clues I know about.
A big focal point of the show is the phrase "Deus Ex Machina" Roger is known as the negotiator and the Dominus of Big-O.
Deus Ex Machina:
Latin, In some ancient Greek drama, an apparently insoluble crisis was solved by the intervention of a god, often brought on stage by an elaborate piece of equipment. This "god from the machine" was literally a deus ex machina.
Dominus:
Latin, meaning Lord or Master.
In ep 14 the world and Paradigm city were represented as being a stage and all the characters were shown as actors.
Possible reference to Shakespeare?
"All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts . . ."
Geez I have to spell this out again?

rip off? i think not. i belive that Big O, or the original series is older then most of the things people claim it rip's off. but because of how much you can see it having in common with other stuff it just made it funnier to watch. I only saw the first two episodes, but i thought they were pretty funny.
We have the car from MIB, a cross between batmand and james bond (that would be Roger), Alfred (Rogers butler), The tick (the first mech big O fights, it has the ears from the tick) plus the ending theme is too much like the young and the restless.... oh and lets not forget the N64 worthy intro CG animation. looks worse then that voltron revival attempt they had a few years ago.

Wrong there sorry. Beck was a bank manager. We don't know the name of the guy the real dorothy dated, but it wasn't Beck.Anlushac11 wrote: We saw that in the past the real Dorothy in ep 14 used to date the guy known now as Beck.
Not really known yet. You're basing facts on speculation.Anlushac11 wrote: Roger back then knew Dorothy and was in love with her and she was in love with him.
All fact, except perhaps the Red Destiny reference. We don't know if Wayneright actually made her or she was a copy made by someone else.Anlushac11 wrote: During the event that erased everyones memories Dorothy was killed. I think it's more likely Wayneright gave R. Dorothy the memories of the real one. She isn't the exact same person. Gabriel is a cyborg, not a complete android.Anlushac11 wrote: R.Dorothy was built to replace the daughter he had lost in the past. She somehow has the memories of Dorothy Wayneright. Good take on the situation, but I think Alex is just after forgotten knowlegde and not actual history.Anlushac11 wrote: R.Dorothy has memories of the past and Alex Rosewaters wants them because the memories of the past somehoew taffect the fututure in Big-O. Sunrise didn't officially animate Batman, but a lot of their production team did work on it under a different name. Yes, parts of it are definitely a tribute to Batman. Heck, even the batmobile is seen in one episode.Anlushac11 wrote: The designer of Big-O envisoned a show that "What if you took Batman and took away his suit and gadgets and batmobile and gave him a mecha and a spiffy car. Yes, more specifically a lot of Big O is derived from the Book of Revelations.Anlushac11 wrote: Like Neon Genesis Evangelion Big-O has alot of symbolism and hidden clues. They dont come right out and say it but they are there if you look.
Actually, the Japanese official site states that Paradigm used to be Manhattan.Anlushac11 wrote: One big question is where is Paradigm City. Actually, Deus Ex Machina means "machine of God". The Megadeuses are seen as the power of God controlled by man. And, yes, Dominus does indeed mean master.Anlushac11 wrote: A big focal point of the show is the phrase "Deus Ex Machina" Roger is known as the negotiator and the Dominus of Big-O.

Yes, definitely a good reference. I take it as Roger playing many parts. Negotiator, Dominus, Police Man and even Guardian.Anlushac11 wrote: In ep 14 the world and Paradigm city were represented as being a stage and all the characters were shown as actors.

You are correct and that it is speculation. I have made this speculation based on the fact that all the main and major recurring characters are linked to the event in the past and seem to be reliving their past.
This leads me to speculate that the blonde haired guy in ep 14 "Roger the Wanderer" is Beck in the past. Since events from the peoples lives seem to be repeating themselves I have this feeling that Beck, or the blonde haired guy if you will, proposed to Dorothy and she refused and he shot her in the Nightengale club. In the present Beck shot her father because he needed Dorothy to run Big Dorothy.
My hypothesis, all speculation and guessing of course:
I think Roger was the military Officer assigend to work with Timothy Wayneright to help reverse engineer or examine the Megadeus found under Paradigm City as seen in ep14. I also feel this is where Dorothy and Roger met. They never dated or were lovers but Roger and her fell in love and circumstances of their situations and responsibilities kept them apart. In this lifetime I feel that circumstances similar to the event 40 years ago have brought their souls back in proximity to one another, except this time Roger is a tomatoe kid and Dorothy's soul is in a machine. I think in the next cycle of life they will try to be together again as well.
And in ep24 of Big-O Alex stated that being plugged in to Big Duo, he hadnt felt this good since HE GAVE UP HIS HUMAN BODY. I assume this to mean that he is like Major Motoko Kutsanagi in "Ghost In The Shell", a human who has had all that makes them who they are implanted into a artifical body. He may or may not have a human brain. I dont think he does and that is part of why he was a homicidal maniac and was so hard to control , he was loosing his humanity since he was now more machine than man.
There is an old Roman phrase that I think was in reference to Emperor Caligula. "What Price if a man gains the world but loses his Soul"
But as you stated its alot of speculation and little proof. I am eagerly awaiting the last two episodes. Whether I am right or wrong I have enjoyed the show very much.
