Would anime still spread without dubs? Yes, as long as there were subs, very slowly, but yes, because admit it, those of us who like it, are not concerned with what languages are spoken in the movies and would still like anime even if we had to read subtitles for every last one of them.

Is spreading slowly the same as proliferating? :p

I dont think it would be as wide spread, most people I know hate subs..... I call it too lazy (joke with my friends) But I grew up watching international flics - even as a kid, my dad was really into international films - so I learned real early to read subs and got used to them.
Some how (for me at least) it just does not seem the same with english subs, I like the Japanese voices. Just does not feel like its real with voice overs, and I think the original Japanese voice actor's (overall) do a better job of getting the emotion of the story across.

I beleive that dubs have done a lot to get anime in to the main stream. If you remember back in the day there only was subs except for the cut-up revamped stories shown on saturday morning cartoons (when there was such a thing as a true saturday morning cartoon). Those of us who truely love anime will buy/rent/watch it no mater what form (sub/dub) it is in. If you don't like either of those forms then i would recommend that you learn Japanese and watch it they way they do in japan. (wait a minute am i preaching to the choir?) oh well. I know that here (at sea) the ship's anime club watches both sub/dubs depending on what is available to watch. On occasion we have watched the same anime two or three times from various sources (origional/sub/dub) From japan/american/another country to see if there is any difference. sometimes there is and somtimes not. it all just dependes on the anime. I myself like to watch subs but it is nice to watch a well done Dub.
And in the words of Forest Gump "thats all I have to say about that"
