Anime DVD Storage

Post by Red Wolf » Wed Jul 23, 2003 9:35 pm

I have finally come to the point where my anime DVD collection has out grown my current DVD/VHS storage means. While this is a good thing for me and a bad thing for those of you who hate mediocre AMVs full of way too many various footage clips it does present me with a problem and I figured this would be a great group to get ideas from.

My current storage method is a small, three shelf bookcase. When I finally got a full sized bookcase last year for my books this smaller one became totally empty so the DVDs, VHS, and an assortment of other media items found a nice new home there. For a temporary solution I have moved some of the miscellaneous items but I want something new with lots of room to grow. I'll eventually need the bookcase back for, well, books.

I would like something that is wood (or looks it), is built with storage and display in mind, and has plenty of room for expansion. Currently I have 56 DVDs (single cases and box sets) and 26 VHS tapes. Being able to also store things such as my anime reference books and catalogs would be a nice bonus. Also I would not be opposed to something that provided good CD storage at the same time. I have over 60 music CDs spilling over from their own storage case plus a dozen multiple CD or box sets. We're not even going to go into the number of AMV CDs and DVDs currently in my charge :shock: The downside is horizontal space is an issue since I am in a one bedroom apartment and most of the wall space in the living and office area (where I would want to show off my collection) is occupied. My current bookshelf covers an area of only 32" in width. I could do some rearranging and come up with a maximum of 72" in wall space.

Creative solutions and specific storage/shelving products are the things I'm looking for. I know a lot of you have collections far larger than mine so let me know what you do. Thanks.

That's a small anime collection, but I bet it won't stay that way :) .

This isn't what you're looking for. However, it may be useful later. It's a box that's designed for media storage:

Plus:
* will hold DVDs, VHS, CDs, photographs, postcards, etc.
* transparent so you can see what's in it
* stackable

Minus:
* pricey, $5-$6 each
* somewhat fragile, will crack with a hard hit

The box width is exact for normal DVD and VHS cases. Box sets are ok, too, if they're not oversized. The old Bandai VHS clamshells will not fit the width, but can be placed length-wise.

As far as shelving, there are places that sell modular shelving components - poles, shelves, etc. That might allow you to build something that fits your space better than a pre-made unit. Also, it would be easier to take apart and transport when you move.
