That damned gesture... What is it?

I've seen tons of anime. Yay. I know a few token words in Japanese. Yay. One thing I don't get is the finger on the eye and the tongue sticking out. Any help?

I think it's a taunt gesture.

A mild one at that, too. It shows mild disrespect or contempt.

Not in the same class of rudeness as giving someone the finger, certainly.

They've got really strict customs over there don't they? I always thought the eye thing was the equivalent of our middle finger or since our country is famous for being immoral the middle finger was worse. Everyone is always doing both gestures so both have lost their sting, really

Actually a rasberry is the American custom of sticking out your toungue and going "THPPPPTH"

Well . . . my avatar is a version of the gesture. I took out the eye think because I thought the normal gesture had become taboo. I always saw it as a gesture of dis-respect.

I would put the eye gesture on the same level as a raspberry, myself. More mocking than insultive.
