Anime of the Decade (2010-2019)

Post by seasons » Fri Jul 05, 2019 2:15 am

Made In Abyss? Attack on Titan? Naruto Shippuden? One Punch Man? Something else really obvious that I'm not remembering right now? Something that people won't think of for this but maybe should?

"Anime of the Decade" can mean whatever you think it should.

You may be hearing about this a lot in a few months, I don't know. Enjoy it now, I guess?

You're also free to make a case for Dragon Maid, Psycho-Pass, Aggretsuko, etc., other series like 1/10 as popular as Sword Art Online was and still is.

My Hero Academia feels too recent to consider for this, but maybe I'm wrong?

Mob Psycho 100?

There is still much I haven't watched, to say the least.

When you consider this to also include movies, it suddenly becomes kind of obvious, doesn't it?

No?

Well, it certainly changes things doesn't it? Anyway...

I don't know what you're going to use this list for, but I think one has to mention Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Which movie were you thinking of? Your Name.?

Oops, yeah Madoka is a huge title that somehow slipped my mind.

And yes... Your Name.

Not really going to use this list for anything, honestly.

Well, you did say "You may be hearing about this a lot in a few months, I don't know." So I figured that meant you were planning something for later.

I guess that would appear to suggest that!

Was more referring to social media, anime publications, people and sources that love to rank things and will rarely pass up a chance to do so if there's a good opportunity for it.

For me, personally?

Tsuki ga Kirei, but I know that won't be the answer for most people. I adore that series for precisely the reason why most people won't even think of it. It is an incredibly realistic, down the the smallest details, representation of Japanese junior high school life in Saitama (a suburbanish area outside of Tokyo) and pretty much Japanese junior high school life throughout most mid-tier suburban areas across the country. As someone who experienced this for myself (in northern Saitama, not too far from where the series takes place, even the graduation song was the same as mine). Usually school life anime has gags, is hyper cartoony, at least has some unrealistic aspects (or a lot, like in the case of Nichijou). Tsuki ga Kirei has none of that. The comedy aspects (usually coming from the relationship antics or daydreams of the characters) are themselves realistic and true to my own experiences. This is just a distillation of exactly what it feels to be a Japanese third year junior high school student, the bittersweet feelings of leaving a place you finally found, and the promise of the high school (and later university and adulthood) future which awaits you. It's sad, yet hopeful. Nostalgic, yet prescient. And the water color, sedated art style is amongst the best I have seen. I wrote an entire article about how it matches my own experience when I worked for Bandai writing anime reviews.

tl;dr Tsuki ga Kirei is good. Please watch it.
