Tell me if you get this feeling always. Here you are, sitting down, about to enjoy your fave anime. Then the anime starts. Before you know it, you have this thought "Hmmm, OK, anime's good but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, BAD MUSIC SCORE! I CANT STAN THE F******* STRINGS!!!!!!!!
It happens to me all the time. I tried to enjoy anime like Vandread or AMG:TM, but I just couldn't stand the string music played in the background. What are they trying to do? Emulate Hollywood music scores?
Same thing when trying to watch Buffy. Nice show, just hated the loud string music. I felt like killing the composer for ruining my viewing of Buffy. Also, I felt the strings are too "outdated" and not fitted for a "hip" show like Buffy.
There's a lot of talented and innovative composers out there, from Graeme Revell to Eric Serra to Maki Kirioka, ones that can completely engage the audience closer to the movies. They don't use the "old-school" John Williams cliche so prevalent in mainstream movies these days. Anime makers should afford to use this kind of talent and also think thoroughly of what kind of music they should use to complete their works, not just play it and paste them on like wet fish on dry wall.
Am I the only one?

I dunno about stereotyped, but I personally like string music. Perhaps the music selections were chosen, not for the instrument it was played upon, but for the content of the music itself? I doubt a good director is going to say "Ok, this piece of music is perfect for the scene, but I hate strings, soooo... no."
Do you have any song recommendations by the composer's you mentioned, out of curiosity?

I think that most of the composers do an excellent jobs in anime. The Ah My Goddess Movie doesn't bother me at all. Normally when I'm watching anime, I'm not really paying much attention to the music, but to the story, and animation. Just Ignore it.

The series for X would be nothing without strings. Ok, well it would still kick ass, but not as much. Having Sadame come up every five minutes blaring through the speakers is great! (Yes, I know that song is great because of its horn parts, but you get the idea.)
The sword, it thirsts to drink of man,
The sword at last must win,
Today is gone, and yesterday,
Must echo in the wind.
