Why some people dislike Anime?

yea, most of the hostility i get towards anime is the whole "its for geeks" thing. which, as probably pointed out earlier, is completely unfounded. i mean sure, there are some crazy fans out there, but its not like they are what you WILL become if u watch anime. its all pretty narrow minded if u ask me. i mean, they might see a certain series that speaks to them and really like it, but they probably wont cuz they go around all the time saying "anime is for losers." it frustrating cuz i KNO that some of my friends will really like some of these series...but noooo they wont even give it the time of day. sigh...oh well, lets just wait till anime becomes totally popular and accepted in mainstream culture (its already starting to happen) and see who are the losers then! muahaha

Hi everyone i'm new and i'm italian and so sorry if my english isn't perfect.
As I can see, There's the same "problem"in every part of the word
'cause in my country the people consider anime only as a thing which concern Kids and so most of anime are under the heavy shadow of censorship (wich some time regard also the dvd version) meantime the same channel televison trasmit vulgar "Reality Shows" as Big Brother.
Dragon Ball, my favourite anime, is probably the most censored anime here.
But guys, what we can do....i dont' care anyway, the important is continue to follow our way and not listen what they says
Greetings from the country of "spaghetti" and "pizza"
(all right, our is the BEST

Most of the people at where I work, with the exception of a few, think it is hentai. Other people don't watch it because they think it is just for kids. And I think a lot more people saw some good anime, but it was just to weird and it scared them off. Examples, FLCL, Excel Saga, ect. I am not saying that they saw these, but something like them that they just didn't get and might think all anime is that way.
The main reason though I think is cost. regular dvds 10 anime liget and cheap 15-19 if you are lucky. Pluse there are mostly series so that that adds up to 40-100. I think that is the main reason.

I really don't care whether people like it or not. All I care about is that I like it. What other people think about it is not going to change what I think about it. I like to get people into anime, but I don't go around trying to force people to think that it's good. If you want to convince people it's good, give them a little taste of AMV. Works a lot for me, and that way you don't have to get anyone to sit with you 30+ minutes, just to show them an anime! Why is this topic soo popular anyways???

I have several anime-loving friends, but I have even more anime-hating friends. One particular friend claims that she hates anime because "it rots your brain" and "you can't make money from it" (moron...). But I clearly remember that even in middle school she loved Hamtaro (she even made me tape 6 hours worth of footage for her) and she even admitted that she liked Fullmetal Alchemist. I guess she just loves being hypocritical.
But some people hate anime even after seeing it. I was at my school's anime club when one of my anime-hating friends came into the room and sat next to me, saying that everyone else was busy so she had no choice but to come to the club in order to eat with someone. After looking at the screen (which was a subbed anime), she asked "Why is this in Japanese?" I felt like I was going do a face-fault. After watching FMA ep 1 for around 5 seconds, she left. The next morning, I asked why she left, and she said it was because she got freaked out by the "giant blue thing that sounded like a 2-year-old girl" (Al).
I guess some people just aren't 'cut out' for watching anime. The media provides such narrow-minded content and conflicts that one thing out of the ordinary would make their brains spontaneously combust or something...

Well theres a traditional thought that is "Animated.....=for children. I'm thinking since this might be true, Maybe I should show someone who thinks that Bible black gaiden or something. Or show them a highly intense AMV. If blood in anime can make you squirm, or Grave of Fireflies make many people cry, then maybe that perception is just stupid. Show someone Closer, Breath of Evangelion, and/or Alchemists' Job, and I'll bet they may take a peek outside there stupid little box, and check out the colors outside!

Well, if I were a person who believes that animation is just for kids and is therefore a waste of time, showing me something graphically brutal and/or gorey would only make me hate it more.
Take Naruto for example. It was intended for younger audiences in Japan, but there are plenty of otaku who are past middle school but still enjoy the show. Rather than just showing something that is shockingly brutal/gorey, try to show them something that peaks their specific interests.

As I always do!Zephyrias wrote:Rather than just showing something that is shockingly brutal/gorey, try to show them something that peaks their specific interests.

Also the purpose of my explanation is that that dumb perception that floats around is not true. If I want to get someones interest in anime, I'd show them something that fits there interest. If I was to show them that it's NOT just for kids, I'd try to show them something a little bit more intense for them to see. Or how else would you get the freekin' point across, huh???
