Forgot the mention, no non of the scripts were of Unit 01 fighting Adam, it was of the final beach scene, with some changes to it, there were 3 versions or so, but one was finally chosen.

But Unit 01, no matter how advanced it becomes, can never become a god, because it was built by man, which naturally throws in some flaws that keep it off par from the flawless "design" of the Angels. Evas can never achieve the perfection of the Angels (including the 18th Angel, mankind) because our klunky, inferior technology is involved. The only thing that brings them remotely closer to God, is the fact they are basically built around a "black box", like so many animes refer to ("Outlaw Star", "Tekkaman Blade", etc).
I still think it would be really cool to "build" a multi-purpose Evangelion, which has far more adaptable and less bulky D-type equipment. I mean, c'mon! I laugh my head off every time I see the episode "Magma Diver", with Unit-02 in that giant pressure suit. You'd think they'd design the D-type equipment as easily interchangable, air-tight shielding, which slips and interlocks like plate-mail between the existing binders, reducing all the bulk, while offering maximum protection and streamlining.
Damn it, I should've designed the Evas! It still bugs me, especially in Mobile Suit Gundam, that all the weaponry (the beam rifles/sabres, etc) need to have exterior-mounted switches and triggers for the hands to operate. Hello! No mech that big would need that level of dexterity if they just rigged the trigger grouping for their beam rifles to plug into a jack in the arm or wrist when the rifle is held by a mobile suit, allowing the pilot to toggle through the weapons like a modern, multi-role aircraft. That would cut down R&D, and production costs, since mechs wouldn't need the equivalent dexterity of a human. Granted, you couldn't give your enemies the finger in battle, but you wouldn't have all the delicate hardware that needed to be replaced from vibration damage all the time.
