Modern dubs are almost always superior in translation and at least equal in voice acting.

But then, they're not free. :uhoh:

Totally depends on the anime in my case. Tenchi Muyo is always a good example, the comedy seems to come out better in the dub (for me) then watching with subtitles. All the toonami stuff like outlaw star, bebop, witch hunter robin, and FMA just seems better dubbed, course maybe that's just how I first saw it. Same for the wayback machine when I saw Iria and Akria on Sci Fi's Saturday morning anime (which was what got me hooked) But I simply can NOT watch evangelion dubbed because the same VA playing misato and mihoshi just totally kills the fan service/sex appeal for me. They turn her into a total bubblehead in the dubs.

If I had to think about the other stuff I've watched as of late.

Angelic Layer: The cuteness comes out better in english.
Blue sub #6: But the emotion and seriousness comes out better with subs. And Verg's english VA is irritating.
Last exile: Super English cast.
Escaflowne? HORRIBLE Dub, but that is an eariler anime so it's forgiven.
Najica: Lila is too cute in english.
Grenadier: Subs, again too much bubblehead in Rushina's VA, and they sound fake kung fu film serious.

Excel Saga: that's just warped any way you slice it. Though I did tend to go back to subs when Excel got a little too screechy. The jap VA did a better job with her, though I liked english Hyatt better, and english Pedro going PUUDING! NOOO! was simply priceless. But at times the subs were about the only way to follow half the multiple conversations going on.

So yeah, taste and mood, unless it's hentai, chalk up another vote for subs all the way. The original La Blue Girl Episode 1 deserves a dishonorable mention here, if you've ever heard it you'll know what I mean. :P

I almost always prefer the dub. I'm just not bothered by these tiny edits that are made. Then again, I don't watch too much anime, so it's natural that I would gravitate towards the things I can watch easier. The only two shows I watched subbed were Kirby of the Stars, because it was one of 4Kids many shitty dubs; and Yu-Gi-Oh Season 0, because there is no english dub. But then the others I like, I watch in english. Elfen Lied dub ftw.

preach on my friend. I highly prefer dubs. Though I tend to think it's more juvinile but that's cuz it IS. It's not that the 'translation' of subs is better it's just that you don't understand the language thus your just too naive to know your being patronized. It's the EXACT same thing in the dub.

Jasta85 wrote:2. having the meaning of conversations changed. this actually occurs a lot in dubbing, usually because anime usually involves a lot more mature content or more complicated themes so it is more targetted towards teenagagers to adults. however in america they are still targeted at kids to teens, so when a conversation pops up in an anime that will be showing on cartoon network or toonami that is considered too "adult" for the audience, they often completely change the entire conversation.
This is what I mean (and only in certain animes, like 70% of them... but lol...) No it doesn't. OFC it's your word against mine and I really don't know the language, but it is logic that a) accents don't appear well in Japanese (except for a lisp! I love it when a character has a lisp <3) b) MOST manga is NOT mature no matter WHAT you say ppl in japan get ridiculed for being on the wrong side of the stuff (not always, some ppl are just nice, and there are big anime cons like in america where one can nerd out without fear of ridicule, but if your in public it's common knowledge- prepare to be ridiculed, ppl have been fired from high class jobs for less). These simple conclusions makes me think I'm being patronized when watching subs aren't I??

Yes the typical anime fan won't care. But, as I see it, the whole 'translation' issue revolves around naivety just like the rest of the arguments. If you prefer NOT too be ridiculed off hand (or patronized) don't watch dubs and don't think too hard about what subs are REALLY saying. But for your sake, don't go into Japan using this argument. You'll just get your underwear hung around your neck.
oh, and one final argument for subs over dubs. american people have not learned how to produce fake orgasms properly so just about all dubbed hentai are absolutely hilarious since it sounds like the people are grunting from getting their shins wacked with baseball bats instead of engaging in sexual activities.
lmao! you may have a point there... but since when was there great acting in that field. May be a cultural issue.

HAY! Rhat's ry rexcuse!! (don't know why I just suddenly switched to a scooby-doo voice... must be the conversation)

But keep in mind in Japan there IS no military to speak of so ALOT of their pride goes into their artwork and media... so it IS possible that 'centered toward teens' is actually brought to a degree that's more like 'kinda' mature but not' or PATRONIZING

sorry just had to add that, I speak the truth, I just ignore it because I'm lazy.
