I don't think I'd ever want to try and get my family into liking anime like I do. My sister is just a fucking jerk and would just make stupid comments and try to make fun of me. I honestly think she has some mental problems. My mom doesn't mind it which is cool, she knows what to expect from most anime. I've shown her and my dad some anime music videos. Ones I've made or ones I really like and downloaded. My mom and dad both act like their really good. Of course, she doesn't seem to be very interested in anime in general. My dad is pretty stupid when it comes to anime. He would usually pop in my room and see me watching one of my Dragonball Z DVDs, way back when I got into anime about in 2001. Then nowadays whenever he glances at me watching an Inuyasha DVD or just about any other anime he'll mistake it for Dragonball Z instead. MY GOD! How can anyone be that dumb? LOL. The animation style isn't the same and it definetly doesn't have anything comparable to it. He actually did sit down and watch an episode of Slayers when I got the DVD set for my birthday, sadly a dubbed episode. :( I don't really wanna see what kind of reaction he would take to watching something in Japanese, since he's so thick headed in my opinion, so I didn't bother to watch it in Japanese with him around like I always do. Of course I do have a lot of respect for my mom and dad. Of course, one of my former friends really liked anime. He liked Tenchi, Dragonball Z, Gundam, and some others. For some reason he would never watch any of his anime in Japanese and wouldn't ever give me a reason why. I told him it's better in it's original form, but he wouldn't listen so I gave up. Me and him had nothing in common anymore so I just quit being friends with him. He was an asshole anyways. In my honest opinion, don't bother trying to get your family into anime, unless you know that they'll give it a chance or you know that it would be something that will catch their interest. Most older people won't think this probably just because about a good fricking handfull of people think there is no difference between cartoons and anime, which is a load of B.S. in my opinion. Well, that's my final thoughts. HAVE A NICE DAY!

My dad likes Simpsons so I think he would be easy to sway towards Anime if I got him to watch the 'less anime' type stuff.

Dragonball Z never really appealed too me because I saw episodes all over the place and as such, it never made sense. Now I have seen loads in sequence and think its pretty good.

My girlfriend is dragonball Z mad and has loved anime and computer games from waaaay before I met her which really helps things. We always end up buying Anime DVDs to watch.
At the moment she is collecting Blue Gender & has ordered the whole of Outlaw Star as a box set.
I am collecting Evangelion and have ordered the box-set for Hellsing.

Personally, I dont like watching in japanese because for me, reading the subs take my attention away from the animation far too much.

When I was yonunger, my Mum and dad saw Ninja Scroll in the living room without realising it was an Anime. They put it on and watched the first five muinutes and from then on my mum (understandibly) doesnt like Anime.
As I said though, I probably could get my dad on the path of Anime quite easily, he likes Simpsons and cartoons in general (the old american ones like Tom & Jerry).

My sister likes the older anime/manga movies like the original Vampire Hunter D.

All in all the people around me let me get on watching what I want and if I want to watch Anime and cant afford to get the DVD's (here in England we cant rent Anime/Manga, we have to buy from HMV which is very limited or import from USA) I get my girlfriend to buy the DVD's instead.

::remembers watching Totoro as a kid and snickers:: Who'd have thought renting a little video would lead to a long, fanatical, EXPENSIVE obsession?

I'm so proud! My best friend picked up a random manga (Marmalade Boy) and became obsessed all by herself! ::wipes tear::

I was oproginally introduced to Anime through general crawling... found it somehow.
I DID eventually realize it was on CN (when we finally ggot Dish), but by that time it was too late - I got an early graduation to Subs and would never go "backwards to" Dubs.

I've hidden it from my parents (taking great steps to do so), they've enver found out about it because they DON'T understand it and probably wouldn't. Although, I think they're getting wise to it:

I drop them hints, such as:

Anime posters/tapestry in my room! PC screensaver/wallpaper, playing jpop, pencil boards, gasshapon/shokugan on the display screens, logon pictures, etc.

Installing MS-IME on all of the domain computers with kana support, Japanese other items and stilll... stilll...

And she STILL hasn't gotten the hint that it's (anime is) Japanese >.>

Thats a nice plan you got, you're slowly coming out of the closet, hopefully your dad won't disown you, throw you on the street and take you off his will.
You are completely useless.

Of course not. I don't have a dad.

No, it's not THAT kind of thing, you queer. He died when I was 7.

As for Mom... you can probably guess from <username danielwang> that Mom is Chinese. So there's absolutely no hope of hiding a Japanese things and hoping she doesn't know about it (visited there once as well).

Omg I have a sageo knot on a flat pen in my desk. Might be recognized!
So that is why my anime is hidden in the last place anyone would look: behind the disk drives in Nephtis.mechacker.com (the mail server). It's amazig how much empty space is in a Dell Dumbmention.

I always wanted to know this but...since you're chinese can you tell the difference between a Japanese person and Chinese person by looking at them?

Of course!
Mostly, it's their behaviour, dress, etc; physiologically, a very large portion of genetic code is copied over (hence the stereotype "all asians look alike"), as with culture.
Actually, Chinese and Japanese are markably different. It's the Koreans, etc, that get you confused. There's one in my class, what can I say?

Stereotype time! Chinese and Japanese:

Reason objectively instead of subjectively
--> Why do we still have car salesmen then?
Solve prolems and think logistically
---> Ever pull at the knot in the power cord and expect it to just come out>
Are BETTER at martial arts because they are:
Non procedural, Highly determinsitic, And multi threaded
---> But we still can't beat computers in Go
Have been rasied in a culture including:
Altruism, respect for others, emphasis on academics/arts, etc
---> traffic aggression, toll dodging, "wangiri" SMS spam, etc
Are advantaged in math and brought up in a culture of design
---> And that DOESN'T explain the accounting "errors" at Mitsui?

Are more devloped in language and communication...

FACT:
In Chinese and Japanese, the language is both highly predictable and yet efficient. Saying the wrong word in a sentence is considered rude, yet many words that are pronounced the same have the same meaning.
SO:
When speaking Japanese or Chinese, feel free to have your friends yell and bleep out random words. Automatic parity, and integrity data allows us to recover the meaning of what you say, even with 17% data loss!
