Who could forget Optimus vs. Megatron. Hundreds of different incarnations of them and they always go after each other every time.

Yeah, but she was pouring her logic into the situation to shoot down Asuka's remarks. That constitutes rivalry, atleast in my opinion. It's not like Rei refused to acknowledge Asuka's existance.

Well thats one sad, short lived rivalry then. Usualy Rei speaks when spoken to, so if auska was mouthing off and being her usual uber-bitchy self it wouldn't surprise me if Rei said something to shoot her down and shut her mouth ... i'd get sick of hearing her gums flaping all the time too, but i wouldn't call it a rivaalry because of that.

Then the problem in this case, is classification. I still think there is a rivalry between them. I see it all the time. I don't recall Rei shooting down what Shinji says, or Misato, or anyone else. Plus some of the things that happen are just too perfect... like when Asuka first meets with Rei and she says that they should be friends for convenience's sake, and Rei just asks why and says she'd only do it if she was ordered to... ahahaha good memories...
