Both cores could've easily been destroyed. Even if the pulsitron rifles didn't work (which they should, because the whole point of the Eva is to neutralize the Angel's AT Field), they could've used the old classic Prog knife. Since they were dormant, they had no means of defense EXCEPT their AT-Fields. Hell if they were truly dormant, there would be no AT-Fields, and the Evas wouldn't be necessary anyway. Just any old towed artillery could punch through them, and use smart ordinance to detonate once the round penetrated far enough into the targets.
