I know this is coming late, but I'll confirm the answer to my question: Yes, that is correct. The actual reading is "aishimai," meaning "love-older sister-younger sister." I don't know the answer to the current question (haven't seen the show), but I would guess it involves using the on-yomi rather than kun-yomi of her name to make the nickname. I don't really know, so I won't post another question.

I think you're thinking of a plesiosaurus, but neither the pterodactyl nor the plesiosaurus is the specific dinosaur Misuzu names. (Hint: Episode 11)
