I guess the real/legal distributors could take a cue from the bootleg packaging method.
Though I'll never support bootlegs or anything that harms the industry.

Hmm, don't really have any views on bootlegging except the people that bootleg AND sponge off welfare/social security or whatever you want to call it, should be shot.
I concur; except for elder people, they have an exemption.

That's OUR hard earned money and taxes they are getting for free, and they are using it to fund their piracy literally earning thousands a week.

But as far as Microsoft goes, I don't care. Bill Gates has made his money the world over, he undoubtedly could pay his staff for a lifetime and still have millions.
I always would run a legit copy of Windows though until a few days ago...
I installed some new hardware, like you do and I got a message prompting me to re-register XP, I thought OK, so I went ahead and tried it.
I was irate, there was no warning or literature that warns you only get a limited amount of installs. Heck is it my fault their software is flawed and requires a reinstall every so often? NO!
So I've got a legit copy of Windows ME and XP, all my drives are now NTFS, and there is NO way I'm moving back to ME, a 4GB file limit would ruin my day and put an end to my amv editing.
So hell, I own 2 of their operating systems, why should I buy something I already have through no fault of my own?
Easy, you fool. XP makes a number hash of your hardware and compares it against a previously recorded value every time you boot. You swap out too much hardware, the hash check is exceeded, and XP recognizes it as a new computer, so you have to reenter and activate. It has nothing to do with money, it's protection against installing one OS CD on multiple computers.

You took the lazy way out- good for you.
It's everything to do with money. This hash check you mentioned, it's what one might call an "anti-piracy" measure. If it wasn't there, people could install on multiple PC's for no extra charge, and MS would lose sales. So MS put these things on to ensure they don't lose sales because MS is a greedy corp that wants money

Do you see these problems on Linux/previous MS operating systems? Nope.

And about me being lazy, it's true I am somewhat lazy, but do you expect me to boot into Windows without a CPU? I don't think that will quite work. I had no choice but to install the new motherboard and CPU at the same time.

Yeah, I probably should have reformatted, but then I would have been uber screwed with not being able to get into windows and having lost my data.

Oh and I still stand to my claim that there should be some sort of warning about the amount of times you are allowed to reinstall, or at least that if you update your hardware you may be required to re-register therefore using one of your chances.

There IS a warning. If you read the EULA all the terms are laid out there. You DID agree to those terms by clickig on the "I agree" button. If you search the term EULA on your computer you should be able to find a copy of it. (it should be in the system folder, or the system32 folder)
On the other hand, you should be able to call MS technical support and have them tell you how you can fix your problem.

The fact that most people don't read that license agreement is how companies like Gator, and Doubleclick can rape your computer.

Geneon seems to be catching onto the compact packaging idea, with their release of the Sailor Moon thinpacks and this: (which beats bootlegged packaging any day)
