Actually, my opinion is that is NOT the case. Anime companies seem to be afraid to bring over long series, for fear that the audience won't be able to afford all the episodes. (DBZ is an exception...its fanbase usually has parent/guardian credit card power to buy the DVDs/tapes for 'em). Some examples of long series that took forever to hit DVD or never will:
Maison Ikkoku (was on VHS)
Ranma 1/2 (has it all hit DVD yet? was on tape, though)
Urusei Yatsura (required massive fan begging)
Macross (again, required massive fan begging)
Legend of the Galactic Heroes (wish there WAS some fan begging, other than me)
Marmalade Boy (fan begging is building steam)
Kodomo no Omocha (also, building steam thanks to the release of the manga)
The only long series that come over are the guaranteed purchases (i.e., the ones shown on Cartoon Network, like DB/DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Inuyasha). Which, if you think about it, makes sense. Now, when is Cartoon Network gonna start on Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu?
