First off:
Someone beat me to it, but yes, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a comic book made here in America, and was black and white. It was also violent as hell and aimed for an adult audience.
The animated version was a terrible adaptation since it was aimed for kids (once again, because of the American view that all animation is for kids) and so they couldn't hack the shit out of their enemies as they did in the comic book.
Furthermore, I think DJ Izumi did cross the line with that one remark. I thought it was uncalled for... I think it's great that two people were able to find each other over a shared interest and have maintained a strong relationship and I wish you guys the best.
Now... moving on to the topic.
Yes - I often get annoyed when series created in America are called anime. I know some series are actually animated in Japan or Korea or other places outside the US... but they are still American shows...
I do think it's irritating when a good US Animation is called an anime or when a comic book here in America is called a manga.
Oh...
and just replying to one other comment...
The Rankin/Bass version of Return of the King is frighteningly bad. The Hobbit was less bad... but still not something I want to seek out again. (I saw that when it first aired on TV)

There are two kinds of people in this world:
Those who divide people into two kinds of groups
and those who don't.

"Hi, do you have any manga?" (me looking for Evangelion and trigun manga)

Several Disney animations have had similar anime expertise. Just look at 1012 Dalmations, or was it 101, they had a Japanese director(s) and lead animator! Wow.Heero_Yuy84 wrote:Random fun fact:
While not officially anime, the Rankin-Bass versions of The Hobbit and the Return of the King had several people involved in the animation staff that would later become famous in anime (I can't remember the full list, unfortunately, it was in NTUSA)
THIS IS NOT ANIME:
