FLCL just cuts the noobs down, and makes them hate it. It's really too much of an artwork to be reasonably popular or commonly understood. Besides, the humor in it is often so obscure or bizzare, it really isn't funny for anyone except die-hard otaku with a taste for the weird...

It's not for everyone, and I don't know why CN would go with something like that. What's next - Azumanga Daioh on Toonami? Oh lord...
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Just a quick note:

From what I've been told FLCL's title is meaningless. A translator I know told me it was actually just a sound effect.

Fooly Cooly was the terrible translation from Synch Point and I've heard their argument that the anime was both "Cool" and "Foolish" at one of the conventions and that this was their justification for the title re-translation.

I've heard a lot of bad things about Synch Point, so I really mistrust anything they get involved with.

8)

Last night one of the letterboards was kinda cool

"Were going to break now for some commercials. Im guessing they will try to get 6 of them in. And none are for the Cowboy Bebop movie."

Its like they are trying to identify with their fans and gain a larger following. I have no problem with that.

Don't they mention that in the manga sequence? something like, "it's the sound of rice cakes being rolled"?

Yea, I always thought it was meaningless too. It's much better if it's meaningless, anyway.

The sound - no, that's "Kuri-kuri". Watch the manga sequences again to see all the playing around with the title's meaninglessness that goes on :D It's genius, really.

Why in god's name did they change the title?

It's Furi Kuri, and they change it to fucking Fooly Cooly. It sounds like a damn show for 3 year olds.
Argh.

Episode 6, near the end. The caption of the photo of Naota standing holding the Rickenbacker VERY CLEARLY says "Fooly Cooly". Thank you very much.

And I actually think the dub version of FLCL is the best dubbing job I've heard yet. Melikes, though I think I'd still prefer the sub for standard purposes.

You know something's wrong when not even the star of the show knows what the title means. :)

Somewhere I saw the idea that the meaning actually comes from the English title -- Naota tries to be grown-up and cool, but he's really a fool, or something like that. I don't think I agree with that view.

And yeah, "kuri kuri" is supposed to be a twisting sound... "chichi wo kurikuri", I'm pretty sure, translates as "breast tweaking" (though they don't translate that in the subs), and "chichi wo FLCL"... well... first we have to figure out what FLCL means. :)

Well - for one thing, Fooly Cooly on the shirt might just be another play on the meaningless title. In any case, whether that's true or not, I always call it FLCL - it just sounds better :)
I still think the dubbing, even if it's OK, kinda messes with the whole athmosphere of it. But, suppose it would do for some (like my friends who can't read the damn subs in the manga scene fast enough :) )

As for the pronunciation of the title, just listen when they have the halftime break in an episode (you know...where it has Naota's head x-ray and has the letters). It has a rolling-tongue sound.

Isn't it great how GAiNAX can inspire us to debate for over a page just over the *name* of one of their series?
