i also noticed the reacuring patern but there are always odds and ends, personally i usually go for the sexy one, well mabye the cute, err.... well what can i say i'm a fan of the whole genra.

honestly in all the anime i've seen mostly the sexy outgoing girls get me but thats probably what most guys will tell you. and i don't like being obvious and part of the crowd so i will say there's something about cute girls that makes you desire them, not in a sexual way but in the way that sends a chill down your back (and other body parts) and totaly blows your mind (NOT other parts of your body) so i will go with the sexy or cute ones, usually the girls that are smart are too smart and militant feminist which i think is a bad thing

It really depends... Look at Twilight Suzuka, by all physical accounts she's the beauty, but she's also not afraid to kick serious ass, so I like her best in that case. But look at sexy ones like Misato, they also like to kick ass... I guess I like the girls that I would never wanna be in a fight with the best...

Well, lets see here. For eva, you listed Asuka as cute and Misato as sexy. I think I'd go with earthcurrent and say Rei is the ice-goddess, and I guess that would make Hikari beautiful. She gets overlooked too much. I wonder what her eva would look like...

Anyways, for other series, I think The Paper would definately fit the cute category while Miss Deep would fall under sexy. Okay, that was a bit too obvious.

I would also have to include people from X: The girl with Inuki as cute, Arashi as beautiful (or maybe ice) and the firecaster as sexy.

The kensuke picture came out much better.

True. And Earthcurrent is probably right: it's common to copy a successful formula, like "magical girl show" or "giant robot show".

I'm just curious why this particular set of three works so well...assuming that there are many female personality traits that you can isolate and portray. Coming at the question another way: I've never seen a male trio that works like this female one. At least, I can't remember seeing one anywhere. (There are other male archetypes, however.)

Saber Marionette is probably the best example since it was written around this set of three personality types. Not just with Lime/Bloodberry/Cherry, but also with Tiger, Luchs, and Panther. And maybe Marine (in the sequel), who was all three in one.
