LOL kthulhu! Anno craming too many ideas... LOL! Ah jeeze, considering he didn't have any ideas for a full 16 episodes how is that possible?
Favorite character, the one who doesn't annoy me and deserves to have lived past the fifth episode... oh wait, there is no such character is there? Well, it'd have to be PenPen then, only because he's a penguin, and PETA would get on my ass for advocating his death.
And jbone, I hope to God you were seriously joking back there. I was going to just pass this thread by and let you have your little fun, but such a scripted fanboy remark deserves a smackdown. Funny how that majority of people I know who do understand it have absolutely no love for the series, the rest watch for the blood and sex and like the idea that it's obfuscated plotline makes them seem intellegent (or say they just like good, 'ol fasioned Monster of the Week series). Quite brilliant in a way. Apeal to the lowest common denominator while disguising it as a deep series and watch the money come rolling in. Just surpised there haven't been any lawsuits from people diving into two inches of plot and breaking their skulls.
Eva, would have been a good 13 episode series. Pitty Anno didn't figure that out until he was more than half way done with it. Oh well, at least the cells make good toilet paper... no wait, they don't even do that!

Personally, I think the primary focus of Eva is not so much the story (which is fairly basic and not too original when you get right down to it) but the psychological analysis and development of the different characters. True, not much happens in terms of plot for the entire first half of the series. They fight a different giant monster every ep or so. Whoopee. Been there, done that. And even in the second half, the plot itself is still fairly straightforward. The Angels continue to attack, and then everything goes down the crapper. It is confusing to some because of the director's storytelling style. The plot is not complicated at all, boiled down, and could probably fit into a six ep OAV. However, throughout the series, the characters backgrounds and the way they think are revealed slowly and deliberately. This, really, is the meat and bread of the series. The plot is secondary to the psychological exploration of the characters, and Anno's message about humanity. Much of what happens in the plot is designed, not so much to advance the story, but to open up new insights into the character's minds and demonstrate how they think and react to situations. It is this psychological analysis that the viewer is called to focus upon, not the story. Anno did not run out of ideas. Everything was deliberate, and designed to show how the characters, primarily Shinji, react under different situations.
What it basically boils down to is this. If you are unwilling to get into the character's minds, you may not enjoy Eva that much. It practically begs to be dissected. It only seems to be a typical "Monster-of-the-Week" series at first. Seen in it's entirety, it is so, so much more than that.
That's my opinion on it, anyway.
I don't think any series is more love-it-or-hate-it than Eva, to be honest. From what I've seen, people tend to either love it with a passion or hate it just as strongly.
BTW, after you see the series, download (or buy, if it FINALLY comes out) End of Evangelion, the movie that ends the series once and for all time. And prepare to crawl under your covers and question whether or not you actually exist (I honestly did this after I watched it for the first time.). As confusing as the series can be near the end, the movie is MUCH worse. You have been warned.

Eva-based threads almost ALWAYS turn into a debate over some aspect of the series or other. It's like one of the laws of nature.

evangelion is made of aluminum. and the aluminum was manufactured by hippies. my favorite character was that dude who lost the leg, yes the show didn't catch my very small attention span to make me interested. yet i some how finished the whole damn series. thank god i didn't pay for that shitty show, but i will be forever terified. terrified of the countless eva rip offs. why rip off a horrible show? possibly to make money off of the aluminum manufacturers. who are the hippies. yet the hippies control gainax...creepy.
