Well, I agree to an extent. Dubbing as a process fascinates me, but dubbing as a result, unfortunately, often disappoints. Although that often seems to be thanks to sloppy-seconds work rather than the inherent nature of dubbing.

A good dub doesn't have to be sloppy, but it's still a second. As in, one should still treat it as an altered interpretation, like one would a translated book, rather than an accurate representation of the original.

Exactly what I'm saying albeit a little nicer and pragmatic.

(I have a similar approach to Russian literature. It's interesting to read it translated to see how it's altered, but, considering my level of proficiency, it's much nicer to read Dostoyevski and Bulgakov in their original tongue...)

Indeed, sometimes even the title "translation" is horrible.
How "Fucking Amal" became "Show me Love", I'll never know.

Frankly, just as you'll get a variety of responses here (if other people actually post here) as far as like/dislike of dubbing, I'm sure you'll get the same in Japan. Some might love it, some might hate it. A lot probably don't care

(I'm actually convinced that in English cultures, there's a stronger love/hate polarization in regards to dubbing than in other places. I might be wrong, but I think people elsewhere don't even pay much attention).

I think the greatest deterrent to a good dub is cultural diversity, something that would make cultural sense in one country has little or no meaning in another. I personally like watching movies subbed and dubbed. sub being the "true" form of it. while dub to understand the overall meaning of scene I didn’t understand, since I know next to nothing about foreign countries. For example, azumanga daioh, those little booklets are awesome for explaining some of the jokes that would only make sense to somebody that has lived in Japan or knew more than, say… me! Of course they got around that by just changing them all together. I like watching foreign movies subbed though, it just makes more sense in my opinion.

yea.. and when you buy the dvds.. sometimes the summaries on the back of the dvds are wrong..

like this japanese dub of Spiderman my uncle had.. it says that it's about a guy nmaed peter that's fighting against a race of alien Spiders..

Is it by chance a bootleg? It would be very odd for an official release to be as severely mis-packaged as that...
