i agree with what most people said on here, but i started looking into anime because the degradation of quality on tv, all the live action stuff from movies, to tv series, to what people praise about them. there are still occasional great live action productions, but with anime, you dont have to be bound by how poor the show is done, or with the limits of live action. in anime, there's something for everyone to enjoy, no matter your interest, although i really using that last phrase. another reason i suppose is that it isnt just a spin off of what was really popular last year.

Hmm...
US Cartoons in general are kiddy for the most part and/or have no storyline. Anime, however, has a great storyline, characters that seem real and, well, end (usualy). Also, mechs are my fancy if you will and here in the states mechs aren't animated as tools of war. There's alot more that makes a good anime and why I like it so much, but this is about all I can come up with right now.

Interesting mode of entertainment. I like a lot of its' visual styles too, and the medium really is very good for some styles of stories/concepts that wouldn't be possible otherwise.
I can't get more specific because I'd have to be very specific. I can't say I have (or can possibly have) a blanket reason that would cover everything from Azumanga Daioh to Evangelion

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I mostly like anime because of the art and the anime expertions like when they make those weird faces and when they turn chibi I love that. And also the fact that it can make me laugh like non other, its like when i watch a movie, its much more different when i watch an anime. My favorite anime right now is Rurouni Kenshin i mostly like it because of the art. Rurouni kenshin has beautiful art and even in the manga it does too. Well anyways i just freakin love anime so much.

Anime is just more interesting than most live action tv series (as far as the sci-fi fantasy genre goes). With animation, there's more freedom. Imagine if someone decided create a live action Evangelion tv series. Since many tv shows can't afford to add in a digitally animated Evangelion vs. Angel fight scenes, the show would probably be something like Power Rangers and/or Godzilla.
But the main reason I watch anime has already explained by others.

What I like about anime? That the writers and producers can do anything they want and no one can stop them. Anime characters can smoke, drink, own lots of guns, use lots of guns, say offensive things, screw around, and generally do anything they want. Anime has no gun control, no speech codes, no laws against "hate" or any other politically correct nonsense.
True, this does mean there's a lot of pornographic trash out there, but even in that dung heap you can find gems like "Perfect Blue" and other serious, well-written stuff. On the lighter side of things, anime also allows for more general humor than your average live-action sit-com because it's not bound by any laws of physics. (A real male, for example, would never survive thrashings as severe as the ones Keitaro gets in Love Hina.)
What's best of all about it, though, is that having the freedom to do all these things, the writers and artists who create these stories don't overuse their freedoms. Anime characters can swear, but they don't usually do so every half-second (unless they're drunken sailors or some such). They can screw anyone and anything, but they're never under any obligation to do so, and often don't bother. (Here in America, some of the older movies have a gratuitous sex scene in them just because the people who made them wanted an "R" rating for their films.) The freedom to do anything always allows the equal and opposite freedom of not doing it.
Best of all, there's no belief too "fundamentalist" or "fanatical" for an anime character, but this doesn't mean that the more radical characters are all one-dimensional mindlessly evil guys who just do evil things because the plot calls for evil things to be done. Every anime character is a hero to himself, and once you've seen the radical's side of the story, you might find yourself beginning to agree with him!
In short, anime is great because in anime, you can do anything you want.
