I dunno, it's never been an issue for me. Most of the bootlegs I find are of anime I wouldn't watch in a fit. Must be a particular market or the stuff, or something.

I've got some friends who have bought bootlegs of Trigun, Hellsing, and FLCL (they might have also bought Bebop bootleg). The only problem they have had is that the last disk of FLCL didn't work for one of them. These they bought were all off of ebay and based out of Hong Kong.
Theoretically, and in most cases, bootlegs are bad and do act to hurt the company regardless of what other people say. However, if those buying the bootlegs would never have accumulated enough money to conceivably buy the genuine edition while they were still interested in doing so then it does not hurt anyone.
Case Study:
For instance, lets say I'm 18, earn $750 a month, and, on average, have to spend $747 of it sustaining my own life. It would take me 8 months to buy 1 DVD. It would take me 5 years and 4 months to buy all of Evangelion 1 DVD at a time. Would I really want Evangelion when I'm 23 and its messages no longer apply to me so strongly? No. So instead of saving all that money for Evangelion when I'm not going to buy it in the end anyway, what if I spent 3/5 of it on an Evangelion bootleg? If I wouldn't have bought the series any other way so no one is injured and I get it in less than a year.
Note: This is an extreme case, do not take it to be remotely normal. 98% (<-made up number) of the time bootlegs do hurt the companies they were pirated from, and what I've heard in this thread makes me doubt the general quality of bootlegs, thus adding a risk factor to it all.

That isn't necessarely true. I bought the whole Berserk series boxset containing 3 DVD's. There is no problem with them nor do I think it's a bootleg. The DVD's space is over 7GB (opposed to the 4GB ones). Plus.......it's progressive :P . Yeah baby!
Sorry to bust your bubble, but according to www.animeondvd.com , the official R1 Berserk box set has 6 DVDs, not 3.

Does your box set have a nice "FX" logo on it? If so, you can be sure they're bootlegs. Yes, they're the good kind with all the features of the R1s, but they're still bootlegs.

So I presume those "Complete Collection" sets that are only a few disks are bootlegs as well? Damn.

I owned quite a few bootlegs before I even knew what bootlegs were. I actually feel kinda lame about them now.

I disapprove of bootleg, the only reason I'd own bootleg is if I bought something and it ended up being bootleg, lol. My parents ordered stuff for my b-day and I'm waiting for it to come, but I'm afraid it's bootleg ;_;. Now if it's like the real thing and readable and everything, I will be angry, but I'll still watch it. Now if it's crap bootleg I will be so freakin pissed and I WILL get revenge. Pray my presents aren't bootleg :O

Selfish selfish SELFISH! I don't buy bootlegs because I want to make anime of my own, and I know just how I'D feel of some *ahem* thoughtless, soul challeneged clod were making money of off MY anime.

Here's an idea for knowing if you?re getting the real deal. Buy your DVDs from your distributor or the licenser.
Really there should be no excuse for accidentally buying a bootleg.
