I'm sorry... the topic of this post kinda pisses me off. I'm from the old school of anime watchers that have been doing it for more than 5 years, and to be blunt, you kids have it good. Ohh! Turn on cartoon network, NATIONAL CABLE, and what do I see? Trigun, nicely dubbed and 98% uncut? When I first started 8-9 years ago, the only real place you could get anime < 5 years old was from your local anime club or by mailing away tapes to obscure fansubbing groups. No internet fansubs with great picture and reasonable filesizes. No cartoon network with actual non-kiddy anime. No, you could get up early on Saturdays and hope the sci-fi channel wasn't playing a rerun of their limited stock of cut-to-hell anime movies(5-8 a YEAR). Just be glad you can stay up late and watch FLCL or Trigun.
