When Scully askes Fox kinda laughs and says "C'mon Scully hasnt everyone read Yo Jimbo?" I dont remember whether Fox said read or seen but I dont remember ever hearing of a Yo Jimbo anime.
Well, he did say "read" Yojimbo, not watch it. =P There's a popular comic book called Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai that's been going on for years that he could be referring to. Yojimbo means "bodyguard" and ronin often hired themselves out as bodyguards since they didn't have a master or clan to work for.

Actually, back in 1999, Ebert did a special 15 minute feature on his review show on the increasing populatrity of anime doing a compare contrast between Disney features and Japanese animated features and how animators on both sides of the Pacific borrow animation and stylistic techniques from each other.

I have it recorded on tape somewhere...it was presented as a layman's introduction to Anime, but it was still pretty interesting.

No, he said "Ronin. It's a samurai without a master. What, you never saw Yojimbo?" (I know 'cause I just pulled out the DVD to double check(Season 3, Pusher(if you care)))

Yojimbo is Akira Kurasawa's samurai masterpiece starring Toshiro Mifune as a wandering Samurai who turns a two criminal gangs against each other. It influenced A Fistful of Dollars and the godawful Last Man Standing. Remeber kids, homage is french for "stealing" :D

Yojimbo is no anime, but if you haven't seen it, you're missing out on a great movie.

You are correct in that he is an anime fan. Not in a huge sense and he doesn't like sit down and watch TV series. However, I have met him through the yearly "Roger Ebert's overlooked Film Fest" at the University of Illionis (mine and his Alma Mater) and he has had panels about anime.

In fact, two years in a row he has shown anime. Three years ago he showed "Grave of the Fireflies" and the next year "Metropolis." I guess he considers them overlooked. After the movie (he even got the original reels from Japan I believe...they were beautiful), he had a panel and discussion about anime and although not a huge fan and that informed, he does enjoy it.
