I wasn't so much into Go Lion: King of Beasts (Lion Force Voltron) as I was into Dairugger XV: The Armored Squadron (Vehicle Team Voltron). It probably helped that the leader's name was Jeff... ;)

Force Five is some good stuff. A long time ago I was able to find single VHS tapes of a couple of the shows, which were edited "movies" from several of the episodes.

I distinctly remember Danguard Ace (Matusomoto chara in a giant robot show? Aw yeah) and Gaiking ("What's that? Zelons on Mount St. Helens?"). I might still have a copy of the Gaiking tape in my boxes in the basement.

Force Five! Oh man, I forgot that even existed until you mentioned it. I loved that when I was a kid. My fave was the Tuesday one with the three spaceships that turned into three robots. Foul Tip and his Star Posidian robot. And then on Friday there was onw where the head of this spaceship was shaped like a skull that would come off and turn into a robot, but my fave episodes where when the head stayed on the the spaceship would fight.

Yeesh, now I'm feeling old. :D

Well, those aren't purely Japanese... but if you're going to mention American shows no way can I leave out Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers and Mighty Orbots, two of the most well-animated shows of the late 80s.

I was "too old" to watch cartoons at that point. It wasn't until the US theatrical release of Akira that I got drawn back in.

Transformers is perfectly acceptable. IMO, Go-Bots is not.

Lordy, I hate that show.

The first couple of seasons of The Real Ghostbusters are quite good, too. I think that as Slimer got more articulate, and Janine's design got easier on the eyes, the writing sunk lower down the chute.

Any discussion of old-school faves we grew up with would be lacking if it didn't include:

Battle of the Planets
Robotech

and American fare like
Galaxy High
Flash Gordon
(it might've been Filmation, but I'll always have a soft spot for those Arborian Leaf Fighters)
Jonny Quest
The Herculoids
Space Ghost
Superfriends

I always liked (I hope I'm remembering this properly) Silverhawks and Thundercats. Of course, back in the late 70's and early 80's I'd pretty much watch about anything animated that was on. I actually think AFN played the other version of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman that wasn't Battle of the Planets. Starblazers was also a favorite of mine... I can't count the number of times I tried to build the Yamato (complete with the wave-motion cannon barrel) out of Legos. Amusingly, through early High School, I loved Chip 'n Dale's Rescue Rangers
