Monster. It doesn't have any giant robots, but it's thoroughly dark, dramatic, and has a great deal of meaning. A doctor saves the life of a boy, and the boy grows up to be an influential psychopath who frames the doctor for the murders he commits, or manipulates others ot commit. It's extremely in-depth. It's one of those shows that you can watch again to pick up on things that you might have missed.

Iriya no Sora - UFO no Natsu. It's about a lot of things, but my selling point to you is that it's about a girl who is last person alive that can pilot a ship to defeat enemy of the war that's been going on for decades that no one knows about. She is of course insane, goes to highschool, and has deathly illnesses caused by her piloting.
