I loved Lain but direction wise it wasn't that great. Good Art Direction, Good Story, Great Cinematographry. Besides Yoshitoshi Abe is the oringinal creator; Ryutaro Nakamura, Akihiko Nishiyama, Johei Matsuura, Masahiko Murata, and Shigeru Ueda directed the series. Haibane Renmei as well he was the original creator and screenwriter. Hiroshi Negishi, and Tomokazu Tokoro are the credited directors of the series. Remember its...BEST ANIME DIRECTOR. Not art direction, screenwriting, and cinematography. So far it looks like Shinichiro Watanabe(yea) is first and Miyazaki is in close second. which was the way I voted how odd.......?8-)
and Satoshi Kon(who I did mention) is so far in 3rd.

Hideaki Anno: This is a guy who really knows how to work a camera angle. And say what you will about his "budget saving techniques". His style puts a great amount of drama and tension in the story.
Hayao Miyazaki: Do I really need to explain the reasons?
Akitaro Daichi: The master of anime comedy. His work in design and motion is really awesome. Plus, the emotion he puts in a drama scene is incredible.
Shinichiro Watanabe (not to be confused with Shinichi Watanabe, a.k.a. Nabeshin): For some reason, his work on Cowboy Bebop didn't really stand out to me, but I really like his long shots where the camera backs away from an object, not really sure how to describe them.
Satoshi Kon: All I've seen of his so far is Millenium Actress, great visual style.
