Saikano, comments on English dubbing.

Well, I just got the first volume of Saikano for my late birthday today (which by the way was May 10) just to check out the English dubbing. Now since Viz licensed and released it, I expected that the Ocean Group to dub it (heck, ALL of Viz's anime releases is dubbed by them), but instead they went to a recording studio that's really obscure known as Robert Burke Sound (I believe they also dubbed Jojo's Bizarre Adventures). From what I heard, these people are students who wants to become voices actors so I felt really uneased about this. Knowing that Saikano is very emotional and dramatic, bad English dubbing is a HUGE no-no. Well, I listen to the English dub, and it COULD have been a disaster but it was actually pretty decent. The voice actress who did Chise was actually not too bad at first; it took awhile to get to used to the almost generic innocent, cute girl voice. The voice actor who did Shuji was almost a mixed bag. At first, I felt he just read his lines off a script w/o putting much emotion to it (some of the comedic and hopeful moments sounded weird and disjointed), but the dramatic moments is where his voice definetely shined to a certain extent. So basically, these student VAs got themselves into a really challenging project so I hope all goes well for the next releases. :P
