I think I'm gonna watch it in 3 runs: first time, which I'm doing now, I'll go with titles and subs. 2nd time I'll just go with the subs only. 3rd time I'll just do it raw Japanese (luckily, I have some understanding of the language). I think that's a good way of getting the big picture
Yea, I think the show was intended to be about real people, even despite over-the-top humor. I believe Anno even took it upon himself to interview real students and figure out their modern-day concerns and problems before scripting out this one...
Besides, if a show keeps being so fun without trying to win you over with super-shiny graphics, high action and hot women, I think it says a lot for the quality of what we're viewing there...
