There's one for episodes 22-24, but I think that's it.

I could care less about commetnary or any of that crud, but the new scenes of the directors cut have some pretty significant content. I am in desperate need of the whole Evangelion series, since I've been mooching my favorite series off of my brother for a few years now, and my energy is draining with every passing day, but I decided not to get the series when I intended to and to wait for the director's cut scenes. They're easily important enough for me to wait and get them. (I'm still desperately hoping the DCs will be in the boxset sometime soon) It's not extremely important footage, it's not like they show you who Kaji's killer is, or show you who's soul is in Evangelion 00, but it's pretty vital stuff if you want to understand Evangelion as well as possible. The thing that really clenched it for me and made me wait despite my desires was the fact that it contains further detail into both Rei's and Asuka's encounters with the enemy Angels.

Should you buy it? I'd say yeah. Sell your old #7 & #8! Those are some of Evangelion's best episodes. If you go to a highschool I'm sure you could find some kids willing to buy those DVDs from you at maybe $15 or something. I'd say it'd be about worth it, but it's up to you. You might be dissapointed if you aren't satisfied with the new footage.

Should you ge the manga? The manga is great, extremely entertaining. But it's got no value as far as understanding Evangelion goes. If you want an enjoyable re-journey of Evangelion with a lot of differences and a lot of similiarities, I'd suggest you buy it, but the series is easily the better of the two unless you like reading manga more than watching anime.

the directors cut pretty much puts "death" into the right places in the anime, as they are slight extensions to the scene's in the seris.

Coming from someone who was also screwed some 300+ dollars out of pocket by Eva DVDs alreaday... just don't get it. That's what it does best. It screws people over.

TV series ending... Dried up funds, people got screwed over.
Movie Ending... People got what they wanted, but they still got screwed over.
DVD release... if you were after a boxset you had to wait a year after the last disc was released. Not to mention spreading it across 8 discs.

So be smart and don't give in. You aren't missing all that much.

I really, REALLY hope they do this for all of the episodes. I don't want to spend my money on a 'Perfect Collection' when all it does is come in a box, but if I have to as a last resort, I will (along with the Resurrection DVDs). It's simple logic, really: an epic anime needs to be viewed in epic proportions.

The episode 21 DC scenes are pretty useless
The episode 22 DC scenes look pretty dang cool, but they don't really help you understand anything in the series beyond the scenes in question.
The episode 23 DC scenes show us a whole new dimension of just how f*cked-up Asuka really is.
The episode 24 DC scenes produce such blatant and huge continuity gaps that their validity is VERY questionable. But the shot of Adam in Gendo's hand goes a huge way to improving the comprehensibility of EoE.
The episode 25 and 26 DC scenes are also known as "End of Evangelion" and totally kick ass IMO.
