What does this ornament mean?

Post by Lone Wolf » Wed Dec 31, 2003 1:43 pm

I have noticed in several animes that a special ornament is shown in conjunction with *I guess* some kind of tragic event. It looks like a little glass dome with a piece of paper hanging under it by a string.

In RahXephon (SPOILER):
When Ayato and Asahina are living together, they go out and Ayato buys this little ornament for her. She later dies and it shows this ornament a lot.
In Someday's Dreamer:
I just saw a scene where there was a kid in a hospital bed and a whole bunch of these ethereal ornaments began floating over him.

It's a wind chime called a Furin.

Usually the sound of the furin chime is representative of peaceful summer days.

But I've also seen it used in connection with scenes of melancholy as a symbol of better days from the past.
