Anyone ever heard of Pop'n Stage?

Post by rurouni_trelane » Sat Jul 06, 2002 8:28 pm

It's an arcade/PSX game, the very first Bemani game (music-based games by Konami), and apparently there's a anime mix or two. If anyone knows the game and perhaps also has a song/anime list, I'd very much appreciate it!

Yeah, I've only heard of it referred to as Pop 'N Music as well. I'd love to play it, and heard rumors of it being brought to a con once, but I never got to see it.
I don't know of any songlists that are available, but you can find a list of the mixes and versions for other systems at http://www.ddrei.com/info.php?game=8.

There's a topic about that at http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... hp?t=26543. However, in the future, it's best to stick to anime-related discussion in the "General Anime" section of the forum.

Back on topic, I later found out that there are a few arcade versions of the game that are called Pop 'N Stage (instead of Music). So I suppose that's where the confusion came from.

It's 2 different games.

Pop N' Music is a 9-button Bemani game, with a gameplay somewhat similiar to Beatmania (which, actually, is the first Bemani game. Hence the name, Bemani). The buttons are much larger than those in Beatmania, and spaced out more. The game is alot more colorful and is generally catered more towards kids (it was originally designed for 3 people to play at once, using 3 buttons each). But it has become quite popular with the more hardcore technical players, and so it features many very difficult songs.

Pop N' Stage is a dance game that was sprung from the popularity of Pop N' Music and shares alot of the same songs. It's similar to DDR, except it has 9 panels instead of 4. I don't believe Konami is making the game anymore since it wasn't really all that popular.

Pop N Music on the other hand is still insanely popular. It and Beatmania IIDX (or, Beatmania 2 Deluxe, which is sort of like a DJ sim where you have 7 keys and a turntable that corresponds to a bar on the screen. IIDX was created as an off-shoot of the original Beatmania, which had 5 keys and a turntable. Plus there was a Beatmania III which went back to 5 keys, but added a foot pedal. Both Beatmania and Beatmania III have been discontinued) are the 2 most popular Bemani games in Japan, both up to 10 mixes each (IIDX 10th Style just started location testing and will probably be out in arcades in a couple months).

I do believe there is an anime mix of Pop N Music which just features remixed songs from various animes. Though I don't know what animes it featured, nor do I know how many of them were made.

But, yeah, this doesn't belong in General Anime. Or really any forum for that matter anymore. But I couldn't resist the urge to talk Bemani :o
