Yeah, here's the deal with that:

There's an older, 70's version of Tekkaman Blade (the real Japanese title, instead of the UPN-slaughtered Teknoman). Instead of D-boy (also called Blade while as a Tekkaman) transforming into the mech, he jumps into some kind of mini mobile suit, and fights Blue-Gender style bugs in space.

Teknoman, or Tekkaman Blade as it is officially known, was the improvement of the original concept, released as Tekkaman Blade. This is the one you're thinking about.

However, there is also a 6-part sequal mini-series, called Tekkaman Blade II. It basically starts out 10 years after the first war against the Radaam (the Venomoids in the UPN "Teknoman" version), and the Space Knights can now produce their own true Tekkamen, with all the cool energy weapons, armor, etc. I have the Tekkaman Blade II on the dubbed VHS, but you can get it on DVD now at Suncoast. I don't know about the availability of Tekkaman Blade, but I'll have to check on it at Suncoast one of these days.

There are plenty of good Tekkaman websites for more information. I had a few bookmarked, but I deleted them after a while.
