The Japanese read from right-to-left, and so books are printed that way. Including manga.
We westerners read from left-to-right. When manga first came over, publishers would "flip" the pages to make it easier and more familiar to read. However this provided complications with the pictures, as sometimes words would end up appearing flipped like in a mirror.
By publishing the english editions in the original right-to-left format, you keep the original picture of the artist and avoid flipped pictures and words. It gets a little while to get used to reading like that, but you're reading something much closer to the original version.

I tried reading Love Hina in Walden Books, took me a while to figure out that it was printed like that.
It does make it hard to pick out which scene is next though, like you said Propyro, thats another thing I like about FU manga, its printed left-to-right.

I cant stand the flipped manga for the US. I dont buy any manga unless its japanese left to right style. I've tried...i coudlnt handle it...specially not with knowing that everyone is LEFT handed when they flip it, its amusing but not nice to read. But yeah, im one of those weird people who wont spend any money on manga unless its left to right...meaning i pretty much only buy Tokyopop and Viz...actually, only ES from VIZ, but alot from tokyopop. --;

The problem with the left/right inversion is mainly handedness and what have you (most people are left-handed if you invert). Although funnily enough, as the Japanese drive on the left hand side of the road, inverting it makes it look correct to you Americans
Blade of the Immortal is somehow done such that it reads from left to right in the normal Western fashion but the art is still the same way around as the original. I have no idea how
