Do you think anime would proliferate without dubs?

I honestly couldn't care less. I was watching it without subs or dubs back when the only way to get series was laser disc from japan. I am very glad that DVDs have made things much easier, but there are enough great movies and shows that would be worth the trouble again.

Here in North America, I'd say that anime probably wouldn't spread as fast without dubs. For one reason....Marketing. It's far easier to integrate something into pop culture (well...I don't know if anime actually fits into pop culture but anyways) if it's dubbed in the language.

For a non-anime example to get my point across...hmmm....For example, Jet Li (people like him, don't ask it's the first thing that came to mind), Hollywood can easily market his English movies...but have you ever seen many ads for any of his original stuff??

I think it would be the same with anime...so circulation would probably be slower (at first anyway).

I personally don't like English dubbing most of the time...I find they can do a better job in just about any language other than english....my preference is Japanese that i watch with subs...but i also have some anime dubbed in french and it's great...so ya...

there's my 2 cents.

moomlight's right. Marketing is the key. Without dubs (even the crappy ones) Anime just would go as far. In my opinion most americans (NOT ALL OF US) are just to lazy to read subtitles or even learn a second language. That and think about it this was when people say Subtitled Most people think "must be one of those low budget foreign films." I heard that a lot when people talked about "Botherhood of the Wolf' and that was a great film. [/quote]

I agree. My favorite Jet Li movies are the "Once Upon a Time in China" trilogy. They were great movies, but few people have seen them in America (may also be due to marketing). However, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (not a Li film, I know) was somewhat successful.

While most of us are used to subtitles, most of the general population isn't. I don't think anime would have become nearly as popular as it has without dubs.

There's a joke that fits this.

Someone who can speak three or more languages is called multi-lingual. Someone who can speak two languages is called bilingual. And someone who speaks one language is called American.
