Angel Sanctuary - Just watched it

Post by Garylisk » Thu Jul 17, 2003 1:13 am

Only 3 episodes long, but damn it was awesome!

The ending seemed a little.. I dunno.. weird.

My girlfriend says there should be more.. but I would take that as an ending and be fine with it.

ANy idea if there is gonna be more, or if the manga continues past episode 3?

The manga continues far far beyond the anime...

but they've buggered it up. They made some significant changes in the OVA that mess up the possibility of continuing as the manga did - which is a shame because the manga is really excellent. I won't say what the differences are but they would really have to rewrite a lot of stuff to continue the way the anime started.

Angel Sanctuary is one of the movies, along with X the movie, that were so beatiful that I couldn't believe they sucked so bad. Angel Sanctuary had the shittiest script of any anime movie I have watched. My friends and I literlally laughed throughout the entire english language dialogue. They completely neglected to mention a lot of things, took out important main characters from the manga, and just jumbled the rest of it together to work.

But if a second disk came out - and this is the horrible thing - i'd still get it and watch it. I don't even like it, but the artwork is so beautiful.Kaori Yuki is very talented.

I have the AS manga on my to-get list. I've heard that it does cover a lot more ground than the OVA.

I do love the OVA as itself, though. I agree that it COULD go on a little bit longer, but it would probably just be redundant and stereotyped. If there was an actual "ending", it'd probably be just a fourth episode showing what they described at the end of ep 3: Setsuna descending into the netherworld to rescue Sara. Hell, I could probably even script it our for ya.

Setsuna runs down a long, winding set of pitch black stairs amidst flashbacks concerning Sara. He reaches the netherworld, fights through armies of undead minions, reaches Sara, who WILL be in the dead center, and WILL be guarded by the King of the Underworld (they always are...), and he will challenge Setsuna to a duel for Sara's soul. They'll have a huge climatic swordfight, Hades will grow immensely tall and demonic, and Setsuna will finish the fight by chopping off the dark god's head with one sword stroke. He'll take Sara, fly back to the real world, they'll embrace, and it's all happy-sappy.

As you can probably tell, I'm in your camp, Gary, and I think the ending is fine where it is, leaving you to extrapolate at the final outcome of Setsuna's quest to retrieve Sara from death and wage war on heaven. Although I'd still love to read the manga and see the full story.

Bah, AnimeNation charges an arm and a leg. There are plenty of places online that sell import manga, I generally use Planet Anime though. Especially when they have 30-40% off sales.

I can provide a link if anyone wants a translated version of the manga. Angel Sanctuary is excellent, I loved the OVA, and I absolutely adored the manga. The OVA only covers roughly 3 volumes of the 20 volume manga, so there is a lot more, and I hihgly recommend you check it out since it rules.
