I found Saber Marionette J to be rather cute. It starts as a typical harem-comedy, then turns noticeably darker and bitter-sweet as the series progresses.
SPOILER
Only thing I don't really like is the cop-out at the very, VERY ending.

Record of Lodoss War OVA is very good. Epic fantasy with heavy (actually, direct) Dungeons and Dragons influence (it was inspired by a D&D campaign.)
Key the Metal Idol. Surreal and abstract, very well written and an interesting take on the Pinocchio story. Also nice how they wrap up everything and don't leave plot holes at the end. Just bring caffiene for ep 14, because it's an hour-and-a-half of exposition and backstory.
Oh My Goddess. Romance-comedy OVA about a college student who accidentally summons a goddess to live with him. Very simple and sweet series, I love it.
Video Girl Ai. Another romance-comedy OVA, but different in tone. It ends more open-endedly than OMG, and the first couple episodes are really fan service-y (The male lead, Youta, struck me as being a stereotypical pervert-character at first, but as it progressed, you see that he is a caring person at heart. Just like Ai at first comes off as a flirt and a tease, but you see other sides of her as it goes on). Ends rather abstractly, which I liked, even though it isn't how it happened at all in the original manga.
Perfect Blue. Psycho-thriller movie about a former pop idol-turned soap opera actress who is stalked by an obbsessive fan. Very psychologically twisted and dark. It has a rape scene, so DO NOT watch this with young ones present AT ALL. You have been warned.
I also second FLCL, Lain, and Cowboy Bebop. Good series.
