Eva Dub question

Post by Propyro » Sat Apr 26, 2003 2:01 pm

Well this isn't really a very good time to be asking a dub question on eva after i just said the dub/sub arguments go no where and are just plain stagnant.

But i'm not going to ask which is better or worse, i just want to know if the dub is accurate. So if you've seen Eva dubbed and subtitled i'd like to know how accurate the english audio track is. As in do they go and change what the characters are saying to make it fit the mouth movments a lot? I'm not entirely concerned with different aspects of the dialouge being stressed, at the moment i just want to know the english dubs accuracy, thats all. Please don't turn this into a dub vs sub rant. Sorry for having to repeat myself 3 tiems ... i just wanted to get the message across ...

I'd say it's 95% accurate. Sure, some things are changed, but it's never taken out of context.

Characterisation is a bit different in the dub, but it never bothered me much. And with the dub you don't have to watch 4 bars of subtitles (why they cared to even translate the radio and television programs heard in the background of discussions is beyond me, it's quite annoying).

hmm, i kinda thougth it provided relevant information about what was going on out side of what could be seen on the screne. Such as the angel attacks and emergency warnings and such, then again did do a good deal of translating the back ground noise ... awfully curtious of them, but not very neccessary most of the time.

Almost all dubs change a few lines to match mouth movements. Literal translations just won't fit the mouth movements and they don't wanna make it look stupid. I guess. I'd say that 80 - 90% of it is accurate, but at the same time I'd prefer a better translation just in case I missed something. I know for a fact that lines in Eva are changed to match mouth movements if that's what you want.

i thought that the tv/radio stations were translated for a reason, the conversation on radio/tv was significant to the mood/actions hapening with the main characters at the time....

well i wanted to watch the first dvd ... but my sister wanted to see it too, and she wanted it in english ... i didn't want to hear her bitching (it's far worse then the dub) so i just watched the dub ... when i had Eva on my computer it was only episode 3 and 4 that were dubbed ... so i never got to hear Gendo's voice, or that guy from SEELE with the visor ... oh god are they ever bad, actualy all of SEELE is bad, but he's the worst. God ... i don't want to have to watch the whole thing dubbed ... and yes i did notice them changing some of the lines around, i think i caught about 4 or 5 of them on the first DVD ... i just don't remember where.

Just watch them dubbed with subtitles, then you can easily pick out modified lines.

it works that way too? Io though it would just do the subtitles from the english audio rather then the japanese one.
