Origins of Animation

Post by Bushido Philosopher » Wed Feb 19, 2003 11:39 am

Say, does anyone know a good resource for origins of animation?

And not just really Japanimation, I mean in general. This is actually a topic for school that I have to do so it might as well be somethign that I like or am interested in.

For those "smart" people out there who will try to criticize that I haven't tried a search engine, I have. There just isn't one that I've liked or has had a whole lot of information.

So if you knwo a good site then please post. Thanks.

What were your search terms? You might want to search for "history of animation" rather than "origins of animation".

The following page includes basic info on the thaumatrope and phenakistoscope. (1820s)
http://www-viz.tamu.edu/courses/viza615 ... /main.html

You could also look for information on Gertie the Dinosaur (1914), which is an early work (not the earliest) that I've heard referenced a few times.

I think this page should be quite useful:

Thanks Doki Doki that was really helpful. I was going to say the first animated cartoon was Gertie the dinosaur.
