Omni Strata Awards section Anime Quick Pick

Post by OmniStrata » Wed Dec 04, 2002 9:23 pm

My award for best overall anime [in my humble opinion to date] ONEGAI TEACHER

[translation: Please Teacher...] Is that right? ^_^

This is my all time high anime favorite. Again, I'll try to be [with this anime? not...] as unbiased as possible...

If you watch this, will you recognize it? It's originality is only passing. Many will think Oh My Goddess + Tenchi. I see too many odd elements that disconnect/disagree with such concepts and claims. "She's an alien coming to earth." Yeah and? "The dude is uber goofy and has babes chasing him!" Yeah dork, but did you notice this anime is MATURE enough to avoid nosebleed stupidity all together? [I've discovered the nosebleed gag to get really stupid now...] In terms of originality, I've NEVER seen a love story of such calibur as this. The characters aren't "cardboard cutouts" as some anime characters are. You can't say 'hero: clueless cutie' etc. He's not that dense. He knows and even recieves his love openly from the ones chasing him, but I dont' want to dive into any "questionable" spoilers. ^_^ This story also has some of the most "normal" character design and personality I've seen considering most anime. [anorexic monster boobs is sexy? not here people...] ^_^

Capture: Super uber high. I'm talkin' about the digisubs yes, but when the DVD comes out [mental note, grab FLCL Domestic dvd] I'll grab that too! ^_^ I've fooled some [actually many] of my friend's who haven't seen this anime into thinking my wuss low quality "digisub" amv was something of DVD rips. etc. I now agree with A&E, can't beat the domestic originals. [prays that OT comes out sooner...] ^_^

Sound: BEST MUSIC EVAR! With music done by "I've" and it's bgms also done by their musician directors, I can't lose with this. The minor sound effects, footsteps, cars, people having fun on the beach all sound normal. The ending is alright, it's the SERIES ending that is my fav winner. (plays instead of the normal end credits)

Action: This isn't a fighter anime and it isn't a hentai either. [though the fanservice is quite satisfying I must say...] Most of the eps are perfectly inclined to flow with each other. [aka pretty much 0 fillers] It's a "sappy" love story. The difference I see is that it's a story that has flavor to it. The fantasy love stories of Fushigi Yuugi and Ayashi no Ceres and other huge romance lovers might dive into this headfirst and blindfolded. ^_^ The difference is, the titles I mentioned is more shojo audience. 100% certain the romance in Onegai Teacher was most certainly geared toward the male anime otaku population. Odd elements are also thrown into this anime to spice it up. Kei Kusanagi's sickness, the Pocky addiction (that many of us fans have picked up...) and then there's the teacher's uber-red-hot mommy. ^_^ This anime's action is for romantic ecchi people. If you want a deep story as well as flesh, there's a huge chunk of it. [the near ending eps cried my eyes out]

Lips Synch: Will redo this section when domestic DVDs come out... [prays the Love Hina people are dead by then and Pioneer or ADV Films will use their superstars instead]

Digital FX: Nicely done "portrayal" of a black warp hole. The production company, Bandai Visual really knows how cpu usage is done. [See Shamanic Princess...] It's old but a goodie. In fact I think Bandai Visual released a good chunk of my fav "best lookin'" anime. Nothing "fake" is seen here. [again, examples of overusage are Blue Submarine and Vandread]

Effort: I can say DAMN! For such a quick series, these people spend NO expense and waste NO time making it look / move good. The animation is smooth and the character's are colorful, cute, and funny when needed. They can also be sad and pissed and tragic when needed. For such a "contained" anime using a limited number of characters, I must say, "KUDOS to Bandai Visual..."

Overall: I have this anime as my number 1 [actually ranked 0, even BETTER than 1st place...] for a reason. It has everything I look for in excellent balance for an anime. The hero isn't an idiot wuss [let's admit it, Tenchi IS a dork...] He gets pissed when needed and his character style is unique. So is his "illness". You really feel sorry for him and then realize he's a lot stronger than he may seem at first. Mizuho, the teacher. First thing the males will notice: WOW  . They'll miss the High School days. It's got DEEP plot element. The background story behind Mizuho, the reason she's on Earth, and Kei's "illness" are all weaved and the ROMANCE factor thrown in... Ah, what bliss!! *swoon...

Reviewable: It's got I've music, hot characters, no nosebleed gags, no excessive violence, no questions about the existance of life or other over-controversial crap, it's all about the heart. Yes, practically perfect (to me) in every way. Btw, the series is short. Officially 12 eps, but if you want the fanservice appeasing episode 13. [funniest ep in history in my book] Than jump. Sadly, it's not a 24 ep jumpstart series, but I think it's better that way. [no fillers needed]

Ok, who is this anime for?

Well, let's see...

If you like Romance anime and can stomach the fanservice. [there's a LOT of it.] Than you can't go wrong! If you just like da bootay... Then again, you can't go wrong. If you want people with depth and character development, once again, there's MUCH worse out there than this. Want an anime [supposedly] carved from an h-game with fun for the family? This will deliver. Do you want [my absolute reason for grading good anime] A PERFECT ENDING! [HAPPY ENDING! BOOTAY ENDING! ETC.]

The people who won't like it:
Those seeking mindless rape/hentai style action
The lovers of violence beyond belief [won't say dbz fans cause oddly enough, I've seen anime with less sense than that...]
If you're NOT a romance buff.
People who think I'm too biased about this anime and will ignore it. [bad idea, at least watch the first 3 eps...]
Tragic ending lovers where the whole world ends. [sorry but the fairy-tale guy [makes love to] girl ending just further appeals to me rather than the [world ends so why care why character grew] style ending...

Yes, this is my most biased review yet but I'm telling you, if you fall into one of the categories, I mentioned, get it or don't. You can thank me later...

Now, for my extremely set opinion scores:

Originality: 8
Capture: 10
Sound: 11*
Action: 9
Digital FX: 10
Lip Synch: n/a
Effort: 11* [forgot to mention the crew made an ep 13 to appease fans... DOH!]
Overall: **
Reviewable: 8

whew, if you have any votes for anime, I'm outta steam and my hands are tired...

"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

Hey, I downloaded the first episode of this anime, so far its is pretty good (I immediately though Love Hina when he fainted for the first time in the teachers house and grabbed her boobs). But one thing I would like to know. After he wakes up in her house, and knocks the box over, what spills out? The sub that I have edits it all out. Just curious and thanks in advance.

Yo, omni, can you list your overall favorite animes? maybe the top 3,5,10?
