Omni Strata Anime Quick Picks (Gatekeepers & Hand Maid M

Post by OmniStrata » Sun Nov 24, 2002 2:11 am

ah, a 2 - 4 - 1 sale... ^_^
[silence, crickets...]

DOH'!

Ok, I'll be reviewing both the original Gatekeepers TV series alongside the Fanservice Friendly Hand Maid May.

Little history on how I came across these beauties...

Both of these series were released in Digisubbed format a long while ago. I came across them and I happened to REALLY like them. Thus far, I've collected the ENTIRE Gatekeepers and Hand Maid May series on Domestic DVDs. :p to all you HK DVD whores... I follow the rule of justice sword. If the digisubs sucks. Ignore it, DON'T SUB them for the real anime. I've also done the same for my Vandread 1st/2nd stage digisubs and now own ALL of Vandread Movement Stage and DVD1 of 2nd Stage. I know it's a bit of a rant but there's WAY too many peeps using digisubs as "free anime"... :( They make good source despite what some "pros" are saying but still, BUY THE DVDS WHEN RELEASED DAMNIT!

Ok, first up, my fav type of anime, DA FANSERVICE!

Hand Maid May is THE anime for horny mofos... ^_^

Practically all the tastes of a person's fav "female type" are shown in this anime. All of them have their own type of beauty and they're all pretty much chasing one man. Yes, the smell of the "Tenchi" contagent is on the plot of this anime. Though there's a minor spoiler involved. All the girls chasing him are ANDROIDS. Still, in terms of originality, the plot isn't all too Tenchi'ed... Hero (Kazuya) and landlady's daughter (who's of course a busty panty-flashin' super hot tomboy) Kasumi are in an odd relationship. Kazuya is on the verge of discovering an "automated artificial intelligence" which is based off a source known as the MAID set. Before diving into the story and throwing anymore spoilers at you, let's just say the problem needed to be solved is a question of whether or not robots/androids should be treated as people... Anymore detail would spoil it, but in terms of originality, there's a lot worse than this.

I have the domestic DVDs. Capturewise, this anime is crystal clear. When diving into "cyberspace", we are treated to CG acid. ^_^ If you were doped up, that's what cyberspace looks like. OOOh, the colors... THE WOMEN! etc. All joking aside, the capture quality for the domestic dvds are perfect. I'll most definitely consider using them for amvs since the Wings of Honneamise debacle is just wrong... [ask people who have that dvd... it's not pretty]

The music is great. I like it due to it's EXTREME happy nature. It's also considered one of the most "adorable cute" ecchi anime to date when you pair it up with music like this. Yes, I'd say the intro revolves around jumping like a maniac Odorikuruu style. The ending isn't lasting, but unlike some anime where I hit the "Skip chapter" button for the intro, I NEVER miss this opening. The fact you get all these nice character profile shots of the girls is also a real treat... 0_0

In terms of action, this anime isn't exactly "that" type of action. It's ecchi with some level of control. Though it lacks in the "combat" department, the story moves at an even pace. Though I'm sure some of you may agree that the last episodes seem "rushed", the extra OAV [which is included in DVD 4, thank goodness] is a nice, well... Extra! ^_^ It's more fanservice and fun hijinks...

Lip Synch : English Dub Equivalent. The voice actors are recognizable from other Pioneer add ons. You'll note that the dub is, even I have to say, sub par. Even Sara starts sounding like Kitsune at times. (You HAVE to find a way to make an Osakan accent sound right. NOT make it a freakin' southern gal... :?) How is that accomplished? Unsure. However, this dub isn't as bad as say, Dragon Slayer or, [puts up holy cross] Love Hina. Love Hina's dub was so bad that my friend [who hates subs] said he'd reconsider after watching the 1st dvd... LOL In terms of dub quality, there's many more WORSE dubs out there, believe me...

Digital FX: this is Pioneer Animation. There is a good amount of "well blended" cg to be had here. Most of it is used as a cyberspace trip instead of just environmental overdosage (ala blue submarine/vandread). Still, the CG isn't unnoticeable and I must say that in terms of perfect CG blending, nothing beats... INU YASHA. It is the standard that I'll compare other CG based anime to... Sunrise is da king...

The Effort in Hand Maid May is barely 12 eps in size. Though in terms of execution and cuteness, it wins as my ULTIMATE CUTE ECCHI of the decade! The small number of casts and light change in situations are rather bland but still, compared to other subpar anime, what IS placed into this anime is very well done. My vote goes to the song score. The music was well planned.

Overall, MY type of anime. Comedic fanservice with a nice touch of drama/revelation towards the end. Can't tell you about that ending but hey, that's the point of avoiding SPOILERS. ^_^

Reviewablity isn't all that for this anime. If you have a fetish for sexy girls in long stockings, then hey, you can knock yourself out with this anime. If you want something with more drama and depth, I'd suggest Ai Yori Aoshi or Onegai Teacher. (I've done a previous review to Ai Yori Aoshi and I suggest you read that if you're interested) I like its comedy factor and if you're into that, that's fine.

I'd recommend this anime to:

fanservice fanatics (I'm one of them)
Comedy lovers
Tenchi fans (most definitely)
Stocking lovers. (each female character has some NICE fabric covering their leggggs...)

I'd avoid this if you're:

Not a fanservice person (offended by it, etc.)
Don't like happy music (you'll be berrated by it repeatedly)
Prefer a deeper more serious anime. (Watch Gasaraki if you want.)
Looking for a BIG TV series. HMM is only 12 eps or so.

My ratings for it...

Originality: 7
Capture: 10
Sound: 9
Action: 8
Lip Synch: 7
Digital FX: 8
Effort: 7
Overall: 9
Reviewable: 6

I'll throw up the Gatekeepers review shortly. Now I wish I could "document" my reviews somewhere more permanent. But hey, if I can help you find nice anime (or avoid anime you don't like) then hey, I did my part...

The Gatekeepers Review will be based off the domestic DVDS (which I now own all of them...)
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

Have you done an "Azumanga Daioh" review yet? I can't recall that you have...

Kthulhu compels you!

Good review, by the way.
I'm out...

It's a comedy gag that didn't hook me after 4 eps...

Also, since it's not domestic, I'll have to see if Chojin can get all of it for me...

unless one of ya'll got the eps and I can grab them off your ftp...

I love Gate keepers. It's one of my all time favorite animes. Some people might be set off by it's cheesiness but it kept me glued to the screen.

Some of it is really funny, especially some of the sexual tension. I have to say it's at least in my top 20 movies/shows.

GateKeepers TV

Post by OmniStrata » Tue Nov 26, 2002 9:56 am

Ok, the 2nd part of the review...

Gatekeepers TV Series...
Minor info to worry about...

It's 20+ eps...
It's continued in Gatekeepers 21
Character Design by the super talented Keiji Gotoh [who did more anime than most anime companies can do in a year...]
^_^
It's deceptively sexy...
And it's very good. [though I wouldn't have it in my top 10]

ON WITH IT!

How is Gatekeepers in Originality? It's, uh, like nothing you've really seen before. My first idea that comes to mind is El-Hazard: teenagers who suddenly gain mystic powers via dimensional circumstances. But that's really a weak resemblance at best. The story straightforward: adolescents are being sought out by a world protection agency known as A.E.G.I.S. (whose meaning escapes me at the moment) The power these high school students have is to summon specific powers which seem perfectly designed to destroy an unknown enemy aptly named, "Invaders". These powers come from another dimension via a "Gate Ring". Which looks royally badass in terms of animation execution. It's pretty hard to come across anime like this. The only other noticeable resemblence is the "Tenchi Syndrome" which Shun Ukiya seems to be afflicted with. It's only a slight case though. The girls aren't literally at each others throats to get into his pants... :D

The DVDs are "alright" in terms of capture. There's minor [only noticeable if I'm point blank with my freakin' tv] bleeding in the colors. But there's much worse out there. My gripe is the DVD menus. I also hate the extras section. Nothing major to report aside from the "Special Endings" (which I saw in my digisubs) and the line art. No reviews, no behind the scenes interviews, nothing...

Musically perfect. The opening score has that "get up and fight for the future" feel to it. wtf? I don't know how else to explain it. The opening is titled "For Tommorow's Smile" and it's perfect for me in taste. It's almost dancey. The bgms that play during dramatic scenes and during combat scenes seem perfectly designed/maintained. The end sequence is slow and mellow which is a good counterpart to the upbeat opening intro. The "Special Endings" in the extras part of the dvds reuse the opening song and play a nice re-hash b/w episode using the whole CD Version of the song. [technically, they're MUSIC VIDEOS...] ^_^

If you're looking for combat style action, you'll get more than your fill. When sections of highway go around stomping cars and when small legions of "men in black" launch several volleys of dimensional cannon fire at an ARMORED school bus full of weapon wielding teenagers, yes, you KNOW you're getting your combative tastebuds satisfied. Unless you're looking for Fist of the North Star type violence, which is odd considering nobody throughout all this mayhem actually gets so much as a papercut... :? The romantic tension gets higher as the series progresses. What starts off as a childhood crush grows into something more. Oh yes, fanservice lovers will get their fill of these girls in their bathing suits. One odd thing to point out, the camera angles of this anime suggest that panties SHOULD have been flashed, but apparently not. It's hard to explain, you'll have to see it for yourself. ^_^

The lipsynch and emotion for the dub is noticeably good. Ruriko Isuzu is a recycled voice which I'm sure many of you have heard before. Wendee Lee. [yes, the voice of Faye Valentine I think...] Most of the others seem new to me. But of all the voices, I find the hero's voice, Shun, to be the most annoying. But overall, the dub is as good as it could get, though ADV does much better. This is a Pioneer dub.

Being done by production company GONZO (or sometimes called GONZO DIGIMATION) you know there will be the use of CG. Unlike Vandread however, the cg used here is quite subtle. Being used only for the "mystic" parts of the anime: Invader morphing, Gate Power, and "Anti-matter-ish cannonfire". ^_^ The cg is designed to augment the look of the "magic" powers this anime brings to life. Nothing bad there.

Effort is part of a good anime and Gonzo didn't slouch for this one. The huge number of characters, plot twists, fanservice  , action, love action (double  ) and above all, complete ending makes this one of the most well developed anime I've seen for a while. I had these suckers downloaded in digisubbed format and now have all of the entire domestic DVD collection. ^_^ Yesh, I'm happy. The bikinis didn't hurt either.

Overall, this anime is a solid buy for fun-lovin' fanservice chasin' otaku. The story isn't disconnected and overdrawn out like some other anime and for 24 eps, it will keep you coming back to see if ya missed something.

Reviewable, see above... ^_^

I can recommend this anime for:
People who like Wendee Lee's Voice
Cool powers that you wish you had
awesome "rush" feeling you get during fights
fanservice
Love octagons (though not as extreme/hilarious as Tenchi)
A GOOD complete ending with no holes to speak of. (Though it does suggest watching the Gatekeepers 21 series, you really don't have to.)

You won't like this anime if:
$$$ is a problem for you (24 eps at 3-4 per DVD)
You want more mature characters
You don't like any of the above
Preferred ending is a mindfuck like Evangelion or Perfect Blue
Want hundreds of flying pantyshots (watch Aika or Kiddy Grade)
prefer straight up hentai (grgh... )
you want something with more substance and less cheesy fluff (may I recommend Gasaraki)

The scores before I forget...

Originality: 8
Capture:8
Sound: 10
Action: 9
Lip Synch: 8
Digital FX: 9
Effort: 9
Overall: 8
Reviewable: 7
